VILLAGE WAY : Bus stop in the rural villages

A delegation of Chiefs and Orators from the village of Siumu is appealing the closure of the Tiavi Cross Island Road for the sake of workers and school children commuting by bus to Apia.
Tiavi Road closed last week to buses for safety reasons following a fatal crash a few weeks ago that killed three people and injured 12 others, when a bus rolled over and fell apart.
Police officers were assigned to selected locations along the road to prevent commercial travel for buses enroute to Apia or vice versa.
The Siumu delegation leader, Asuao Uvalu, confirmed a petition letter to the Minister of Works and also Chairman of the Transport Control Board, Tuisugaletaua Sofara Aveau, urging a reconsideration.
“We believe the road is still safe, even if it needs widening in some areas and making some of the hills less steep,’ Asuao told Newsline on Friday.
“We travel to and from Siumu through Tiavi Road everyday and the short trip is much easier and convenient. The bus leaves home at 6.00am in the morning and arrives in plenty of time for the children to attend school.
“The second run scheduled at 8.00am in the morning is ideal for the workers because they start at 9.00am.”
Asuao blamed driver error and the unsafe condition of the bus that was involved in the recent accident that prompted the closing of the road.
He pleaded with the Government to consider the burden on families of having to sent their children to live away with families in Apia so they can attend school.
He drew attention to the inconvenience of having to wake up early in the morning to catch the 4.00am bus taking the long route through Safata and Lefaga that take several hours to arrive in Apia.
Asuao hoped to impress on the Government that commuters from neighbouring Falealili district are also suffering the same dilemma as Siumu.
“Farmers who sell their produce at the market in Apia are also dependent on the bus service to bring their produce to town so they too are affected by the re-routing of travel for us from the area.”
The Minister of Works was on an inspection visit in Savaii on Friday and is yet to look over the Siumu petition.
Meanwhile the shorter trip over the hill has been rerouted for the longer trip via the Aleisa connection road or to the turn at Leulumoega to link up to the road from Apia to the Faleolo International Airport.
