Swiss knife makes it on flight to Samoa PDF Print E-mail

A Swiss pen knife made it to Samoa on an Air New Zealand flight last week despite heavy security at Auckland Airport.
The knife was in a bag carried on to the plane by a passenger traveling from Auckland to Samoa.
The knife belonging to a person who did not want to be identified was in the bag prior to going through security check in at Auckland International Airport.
The passenger was not aware that the pen knife was in the carry on luggage until the flight had taken off.
According to the passenger, no report has been made to authorities about the incident for fear of prosecution as the carrying of the dangerous weapon was unintentional.
The passenger raised a concern with Newsline about safety of flights to Samoa if such a weapon, albeit small, made it onto the plane without their knowledge.
“What other things make it to the plane without detection,” the passenger wondered.
General Manager of Samoa Airport Authority Pouniu George Hazleman said he could not comment on the incident without an official report.
But he did say that the length of a knife or what is deemed to be a dangerous weapon determines if it should be allowed on a plane at all.
“If allowed it would be carried in check-in baggage,” he said.
Asked if he was concerned about the safety of those on board that such a weapon made it through, he said: “Again, I cannot comment because it might not have happened.”
He did however say that if the event occurred and if it was a lapse in security check in at Auckland Airport than New Zealand authorities would be contacted to investigate the matter.

at palma majorca , june 2008, i picked up a leaflet stating that knife blades up to 6cms are permisable.
it appears NO KNIVES are allowed from UK, so much for EC or is it how each country wishes to interpret INTERNATIONAL LAW!!!!
