Written by Pio Sioa
Monday, 23 June 2008
Three people died and 12 admitted to the Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital , when a bus rolled over at the Tiavi Cross Island Road on Saturday,.
A 70-year-old woman and another who was 53 years were killed, along with a 14 year old boy.
Some of the injured have already been discharged from the hospital while the others are reportedly stable and recovering well.
The bus was heading down hill when it went out of control and rolled over. Its wooden frame shattered on impact as it spun out of control,.
Sections of the frame were scattered along the path it took.
The accident is the worst on the road so far this year.

How Sad
written by Daff, June 24, 2008
It's very sad to read about this, the families affected will be in our prayers and especially for those who have lost loved ones. Our sincere condolences for all those affected.

Buses now have to be looked at, I know our people have been riding in those buses for decades and I for one have enjoyed riding in a bus in Samoa (only when it's not over-packed), but there's a point where safety has to be looked at, and I guess with this terrible accident that it has now come to that exact point.

Those buses are not safe, especially when you have it loaded as it always is with people sitting on top of each other, and I've had the experience of driving past one of those buses on that tiavi road earlier this year and they have no regard for anyone else on the road and they drive at excessive speed. All I know is that this is a tragedy and the only good thing that will come of it is if the government looks at the safety of buses and actually makes a change.

Lessons to be learnt
written by porsche, June 24, 2008
First and foremost, my prayers and condolences to the familes and friends of those affected. Im so sorry that it had to be your loved ones. May you find peace and warmth in these trying times.

Secondly, I never like our roads ever since I started driving in the late 90s.
While Im not comparing Samoa with other countries, when it comes to safety and security issues, these are the things that should be the priority coz it concerns peoples lives every single minute of the day.
There are no signages at almost everywhere. The humps and common sharp curves everywhere are just accidents waiting to happen. No signages in these accident prone areas.

I think the most people vulnerable to these flaws are the tourists and visitors to our islands who know nothing about our road system. I can remember a couple of accidents involving toursits who admitted their lack of knowledge about samoan roads esp the adsence of signages and road symbols.
anyways, I hope the mot and the police as wel as the govt take heed to these things.
For sure there will be more deaths on our roads if no action is taken

Faamaise atu le Atua mo aiga uma ua a'afia i lenei faalavelave.

I myself have experienced the reckless of bus drivers in Samoa. Im from American Samoa, but my parents were a faifeau in Lotofaga Aleipata. I understand when those drivers packed their buses with people and everything their taking to Apia. Even now when Im visiting I can't ride on any bus no more, cause those drivers are so reckless, dont even care about the lives of the people, all they care about is making money....and feel so sorry for them. The police should really look in to it by now....it has happened for so many times and something should've been done by now.
Ia alofa le Atua ma fesoasoani atu i nai aiga.....God bless u all......thank u, from California

It is really sad that this happened. I don't remember if I have ever been to this side of Samoa. But something needs to be done seriously about the roads. My husband is originally from A'ufaga, Lepa and everytime we go there I always get scared because the buses are always overcrowded and then the roads are'nt even safe and even the drivers thinks it's a joke. I hope the parliament will take a good look at this issue and do something about it. Let's prevent this tragic accident from happening again. smilies/smiley.gif
