RECRUITING : Assistant Police Commissioner Papali’i Li’o Masepa’u explains the process of recruitment.

More than 400 applicants will be put through a whole series of tests where only 40 or so, are expected to finally emerge as new police recruits to be added to the force.
The new constables will add to the more than 500 officers in the service including those who are away on international duties overseas.
“The majority of the new applicants are boys but we do have girls as well,” Assistant Commissioner, Papali’i Li’o Masepa’u.
“We have a lot of young people who want a career in the force as shown by the number of applications coming through every time we look to recruit new officers.”
All applicants will be grounded on how to act and react as an officer by taking part in various scenarios where they have to argue the merits of a case under investigation.

Pass this first step and next up will be an entrance examination . Survivors will then have to go through a tough physical test that involves pounding the road or climbing exercises for strength and stamina.
Those who are still hanging on afterwards are then allowed to move to the final hurdle of a 3 months intensive training.
“The numbers start dropping off all the way through even those who make it to the intensive course, so by the end we are left with about 40 or thereabouts who will join the force as constables.”
The fresh new officers should be in the clear to become the new recruits for 2008 by next October when the process dust finally settles.
“ The new recruits will fill in for officers who have left the force either by retirement or resignation.
“We try to keep to a ceiling of just over 500 officers because of budget constraints, so our recruitment process depends on places we need to fill, that is why we don’t do it every year.”
