A 56 year old male tourist has been charged with drug smuggling after he was caught at the Faleolo International Airport in possession of cannabis.
This was confirmed by Assistant Police Commissioner, Papalii Lio Masipau, who says that the accused is scheduled to stand in court next Monday.
The tourist reportedly had the cannabis hidden in a packet of Marlboro cigarettes.
The tourist is currently staying at Aleipata and has to report to the Police Headquarters every two days.
Papalii reminds anyone who intends to smuggle illegal drugs into the country that the canine unit is very effective in detecting these drugs, and you will be arrested on the spot.

Investigation needed
written by lomi, February 14, 2008
We know the K-9 is effective. How effective is the Handler? January of 2008, while traveling thru I observed the K-9 Unit run thru the airport and passengers. The K-9 twice hit on a young lady and a male partner in their late twenties' dufflebag. On the second hit, the K-9 Unit were returning for a confirmation run. The K-9 went to the same bag and began digging, it then decided to sit next to it. The Handler pulled on the leash. The K-9 refused to go. The Handler grabs the K-9 by the neck in a headlock type grab and pulled him away. Without searching they disappeared. How effective is this? The owner of the bag never made an attempt to see why the dog was hitting on her bag neither did her partner. They both pretended nothing was going on while the rest of us looked on. I would if it was my bag. Because I would be curious. The K-9 will lose intrest in the job he's trained to do if he's not handle properly. People do not understand how the K-9 works. The K-9 is not looking for drugs, he is looking for his/her toy. He doesn't know the difference between a marijuana and a banana leaf if he saw one. The same toy scented with the odor of different types of drugs. When the drug is found, the Handler will take the toy out of his pocket and pretend to pull it out of the bag or wherever the hit was and gives it to the K-9. Even if he doesn't find anything the toy still need to be given to the K-9 to let him know that he is doing an awesome job. This officer must be investigated for the good of the department and the good of the people. If more drugs get thru which are not produced in Samoa. We could have a big problem on our hands. Because we're not train and lack the understand of the affect of it to deal with it will lead to death and other major problem. Is this officer think we're that dumb, that while he's doing this no one doing the same job elsewhere is watching? I'm sure many good and honest officers around the country has the ability and desire to learn to be good Handlers better than the one we already have. C'mon, have some pride in your job and be honest. Its not the uniform that make the officer, its the officer that makes the uniform.
Hm..

Lomi unfortunately in a country like samoa money speaks a hell of alot more than pride in the uniform unless your playing in the manu samoa rugby uniform.....its a case of get over it corruption is ripe in samoa and everywhere in the world, until we become a wealthy nation then it can be minimised.

As small as Samoa is, it's possible to get things done and fix the corruption when you have the right/honest people in office. Thats where it will have to start. Its the small things that chops my hide with what goes on there. Because others outside of the country who are not Samoans look at us as good and honest people, but its the ones you run into when you go there that tells a big lie about the rest of us. The honest people is who you will find outside of business and government. The new generation of the country have learn to be very mean and corrupt because of money. Forget about elsewhere, we are not elsewhere, we are Samoan. We are supposed to be honest. I feel bad when I go there because there's so much that needed to be done to improve things.
