Police have confirmed two cases of alleged suicide occurring since New Year's Day.
Police Assistant Commissioner Lilomaiava Fou Taioalo told Newsline yesterday that a 47-year-old man from Savaii died from gunshot wounds.
"The deceased resided in Savaii," Lilomaiava said, "the report we have in hand is that the deceased was upset by the way overseas relatives told him off and decided to take his life."
The second suicide involved a a 14-year-old girl from a village on the western side of Upolu, who allegedly hung herself using a piece of cloth, Lilomaiava also confirmed.
He said at the time of this interview that he had not recieved the specifics of the case from his investigating officers.
But according to sources close to the deceased's family who Newsline briefly spoke to on the condition their names not be mentioned in this article, the young girl hung herself in a room of their home.

The source said the young girl got "really mad" with her father who told her to get rid of a puppy she took under her care after it was hit by a vehicle two weeks earlier. The source said that it was the brother of the deceased who found her body later in the evening of Saturday.
Officials at the Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital confirmed that the teenager's body is still at the hospital's morgue.
It's believed these are the first two reported cases of suicide in the country this year so far.
Samoa has the highest cases of suicide over the years, which became a real concern. It led to the establishment of a non-government organisation called Faataua le Ola (FLO) which offer services to those contemplating suicide.
Attempts to get a comment from this organisation yesterday were not successful.
A woman who answered the phone from their office said the only person who can comment publically regarding their affairs was their chief executive officer, Ofeira Manuta'i. She said the CEO was having a meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister.
