New Police Headquarters ready for official opening

Police are calling on members of the public to watch out for their neighbors as cases of burglary and theft continue to rise.
Police Assistant Police Commissioner and Media Officer, Papalii Lio Masipa’u said yesterday that Police have been called into numerous addresses in areas such as Leone, Faatoia, Vaivase uta, Vaivase Tai, Tanugamanono, Sinamoga, Lotopa and Vaiusu regarding cases of burglary and theft.
“Members of the public, especially those in areas mentioned to be aware of the fact that thieves are out there ready to strike.”
Papalii said most of these acts took place when people are not at home or very late at night.
“Therefore it really important for people to watch out for their neighbors,” he said, “perhaps organize a neighbor watch out when people are not at home.
Papalii said the stuff taken varied from boxes of tin fish, weed eaters, and so fourth.
“One hardly expected people stealing these kinds of stuff,” he said. “There are no aggravated elements involved in all the reported cases so we thought these acts are those of youth acting out of desperation.”
Pressed by one of the reporters if this (act of desperation) is due to people being poor, Papalii said, “not necessarily because there are also cases of people involved who are well off.
“But we believe these are acts of youth in gangs who get together and engaged in these kinds of activities.”
Papalii said Police are not tolerating these kinds of actions and are investigating.
Meanwhile, Papalii said six people have been charged with possession of narcotics over the past week.
He urged the community to assist the Police in trying to tackle this continuing problem.
“We need the public’s support in ensuring those dealing in drugs are brought to justice,” Papalii said.
Narcotics have been a major problem for Police and the courts in this country. Papalii said most of the cases relating to narcotics are reported during the festive season.
“I remember around mid year there was none (narcotic case) reported,” he said. “We only started to get cases of such nature during the festive season and we suspect it’ll continue on until mid year.”
