A 32 year old male from the village of Alamagoto expressed remorse in the District Court on Monday for abusing his wife on the on the night of the 14th October 2007. It was reported that the accused and his wife after a night out at Paddles nightclub on the 14th October, started to argue. As the couple walked by Aggie Greys Hotel they continued to argue and the accused then beat the victim. The couple continued to argue and caught a taxi home, when they reached Taufusi, the accused again slapped the victim. The accused pleaded guilty to the charge of causing actual bodily harm, he also expressed remorse for his action and asked presiding Judge Vaemoa Vaepule Vaai for another chance as he is the breadwinner for his family, these became mitigating factors on his behalf, as well as the fact that he was a first offender, or this was his first conviction. However, Judge Vaepule reminded the accused of the seriousness of abuse especially of males to females. He reiterated the message that this type of abuse (male to female) is inappropriate especially for a married couple. The issue of domestic violence was also addressed by Judge Vaepule who again warned about how to control your attitude when under the influence of alcohol. The victim also requested that the charges be revoked as she and her husband had already reconciled. However the accused was still ordered to pay $150.00 penalty fee.

It's sad to see that happening over and over again because they (men) say they are the "breadwinner" of the family. Gurl, you have to get up and get out!! I grew up in a family like that; I saw my mother being beaten when my father came home in the wee hours of morning, drunk. My mother still has marks of such beatings but she got over it and got out. She stuck with our father in the beginning because of us. They both worked in the Samoa Government with professional careers but their marriage was not perfect. Now, she's at peace despite the fact that our father has become sober and quit back in 1984. My younger siblings don't know a thing about it. I grew up with and in it smilies/sad.gif I learned from it too.

My own life was nearly short-lived because of an abusive partner who wanted nothing but his one and only son from me. I should've have listened and learned from my mother and my past. Yet, I didn't until I was almost ran over by the man. I pursued the case to court where he kept saying he was sorry but I learned from it. He harrassed me @ my work; @ college when I took evening classes; public places during soccer/netball tourneys; etc. It was too much for me to take that I asked for a restraining order which really didn't help. On the day of the trial, he didn't show up. His family had put him on a plane back to Samoa. The judge issued a bench warrant for his arrest (it's still valid) for no-show and contempt plus outstanding alimony payments.

My life is at peace. I don't have to turn my head around just to see if he was following me. My son is all grown up and handsome. He only knows and remembers this man as one who beats his Mommy up. It is not because of alcohol but their ego that they think they own us but they don't. I know he's remarried and he's doing the same thing to that woman who won't leave him. I am glad I made the choice and am living freely; being my own "breadwinner." My family have always been there to help.

remorseful???....i dont think so because for sure he is going to lift that fist again...i feel sorry for the woman and i hope shes alright. for one thing if he was the breadwinner then he should have been saving those cash to feed his family. i for one saw this kind of abuse and i mean seriously its not pretty. women are not punching bags. he shouldnt get a second chance maybe behind bars would teach him a lesson.
