Samoa’s Tuiloma Neroni Slade

While his rivals have already espoused their credentials in the media for the job of Secretary General of the South Pacific Forum, none could be pried out of Samoa’s Tuiloma Neroni Slade, last Friday.
All that Newsline could get off the former judge of the International Criminal Court, was the shy smile of an elusive candidate caught in the corner with nowhere left to run or hide.
He did promise however that he will have much to say if successful.
Tuiloma is one of three candidates nominated to be the next Secretary General, to replace the late Greg Urwin who was buried in Apia last Thursday.
He is Samoa’s official nominee for the job.
Tuiloma was close with the late Urwin, a relationship that goes back to their time together when both were working in Apia - Tuiloma as Attorney General while Greg Urwin was serving as an Australian diplomat to Samoa.
“Of course he married a Samoan but Greg was a ‘Samoan man,’ Tuiloma claimed, when he finally found something to talk about safely.
“He has outstanding leadership in the region with deep insights into the problems, especially the vulnerabilities of the smaller island countries.”
Urwin was further applauded by Tuiloma as a man with absolute dedication, and who was credited with his role in the Pacific Plan that set the platform of action for the developments the Forum wanted to undertake.
“He was responsible for a holistic plan of approach that went beyond general environment to include the need for social, health and educational improvements needed by the region.”
Tuiloma will be part of Samoa’s Delegation to the Pacific Leader’s Forum meeting in Niue this week.
