HAPPY DAYS WHERE ARE THEY ?  : Former SDUP opposition leaders, Asiata Saleimoa (left) and Le Mamea Ropati now on the loose- one by choice the other by vote

The newly formed grouping of opposition Members of Parliament has ‘released’ the leader of the Samoa United Democratic party, SDUP, Satupaitea Member of Parliament, Asiata Saleimoa “to follow up on issues he is keen to pursue.”
MP Le Mamea Ropati, who resigned from the SDUP,  continues to stay away but with speculations starting to come through that he maybe headed for the Council of Deputies.
The interim Chairman of the political grouping, Faleata I Sisifo Member of Parliament, Lealailepule Rimoni Aiafi, confirmed these latest developments yesterday after a group meeting.
“We called an emergency meeting last night (Wednesday night) and unanimously agreed, to release Asiata, to follow up on issues that are of interest to him personally,” Chairman Lealailepule confided to Newsline.
The MPs who were affiliated to the SDUP before the merge with independent MPs last week, have elected to stay on with the new political grouping.
MP Asiata went public earlier in the week to voice his views about the formation of the new political grouping and of the active links still remaining with the SDUP.
It is unclear however if the ‘party’ was informed beforehand of his unilateral decision to make his views public.
MP Asiata appeared to have made himself a thorn to the unity of the new political grouping, who are keen to wipe the slate clean by projecting an image of a “united and stronger” opposition.
It was MP Asiata who held off at first from agreeing to a united political grouping, preferring instead for a coalition between the independents and the SDUP members.
Chairman Lealailepule, confirmed that the backing of other former SDUP members are now solidly behind the new political initiative.
He added that their only disappointment now is with the former SDUP leader ,MP Le Mamea Ropati, who is not part of the new group.
‘There are rumours he maybe destined for a position as one of the Members of the Council of Deputies, but that is doubtful in our books,” Chairman Lealailepule speculated.
‘There are others in the Government party who may be given first looks like Tuiloma Lameko ( long serving MP) and Fiame Naomi (Minister of Women) who have been in the HRPP for a long time.”
Chairman Lealailepule added that the new group are now in the process of deciding a name for the party.
‘We are meeting this Sunday to start organizing the national competition to give our party a new name.”
It may be a while however before the issue of a party leader is decided.
