Clerk of the Legislative Assembly, Mase Dr. Toia Alama

Close to two decades of attending sessions in Parliament came to an official end yesterday for the Clerk of the Legislative Assembly, Mase Dr. Toia Alama,
Before Parliament adjourned until the 18th of August.2008, the Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, commended the Legislative Clerk on the many years of service.
“It was her influence as the Clerk of the House, that has made all of us in Parliament work, she is the one who schedules all the sessions we are called to attend,’ PM Tuilaepa says,
Mase sported a mischievous chuckle when reminded about the comments afterwards in her office by Newsline.

“There are now 15 House Committees, compared to only 3 they started with and that means they’re all busy working now in their various committees,” she noted. “This is reflected in the regular sessions called for Parliament.”
The Prime Minister was also impressed with the documented records of the 1960 constitution convention that the office of the Clerk has now put together and is available to everyone.
“The only records we had at first from the convention were translations of the speeches by members, but I was really fortunate to find the records of the actual speeches, and have it properly documented.
“Government in particular appreciates the advantages of reading the actual words spoken by the convention members, because it provides valuable insight into the real substance of what the old men had in mind as they were framing the constitution.”
Another achievement the Legislative Clerk is credit with is the documenting of members speeches ‘the day after.’
“Whoever speaks in Parliament gets a printed copy of his speech the day after to go over for corrections before handing it back to us for proper documentation and cataloguing it into dated reference volumes.”
Mase expects to retire back to the medical profession.
