Dr. Rob Wontoon.

The former Cook Island Prime Minister, Dr. Rob Wontoon has praised the tender system used by Samoa for the purchase of petroleum products from overseas suppliers.
The former leader who is a pathologist by profession, is currently on a relieving assignment at MedCen Hospital for his New Zealand employer AuckPac New Zealand,
Dr. Wontoon had a positive reaction to the recent meeting of Deputy Cook Island Prime Minister Sir Terapai Moeate and Samoan Prime Minister Tuilaeapa Sailele Malielegaoi last January , regarding fuel supply.
According to a press release, Sir Terapai was here to discuss with PM Tuilaepa Sailele the best way forward to obtaining better fuel prices for his country (Cook Islands).
Dr. Wontoon says Samoa has always been a classic example of a Pacific Islands that enjoys the privilege of cheaper fuel prices when compared to other Pacific Island nations.
“Samoa’s fuel supply is tendered, which is something the Cook Islands have always looked into but we never implemented it:” Dr Wontoon said.
“The initiative is a very positive one; Samoa has always been admired for having fuel available to them at such a low price compared to other islands including the Cook Islands:” says Dr. Rob.
Tuilaepa told Sir Terapai in the meeting that Samoa now has its major tank farm and the ability to store vast quantities of fuel allows the government to maintain ample supplies and keep prices down.
Bulk buying fuels and obtaining pharmaceuticals were two of many regional projects which both Tuilaepa and Sir. Terapai believed that Samoa and the Cook Islands could cooperate on.
Both the Cook Islands and Samoa leaders, plan on working through, one central ordering agency in, which could be based in New Zealand to handle orders and distribution.
Tuilaepa and Sir Terapai also agreed that in terms of bulk buying, a practical strategy would be the best for both countries to adopt.
