AS IT WAS : This was the protest as it was in front of Parliament last year

Government is steeling up its resolve to stand steadfast while the
storm of protest against the road switch to the right hand side, swirls across the length of Apia on its way to Parliament on Monday.

The battle over the past few days have been waged mainly through a litany of opinions on the media by opposing sides to win public support.

Government has been taking every opportunity while in the public eye to drive home the poor versus the rich wedge to throw doubt at the protesters integrity.

The Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi even went to the extent of joking about the protest at the launcing of trails for ‘alia’ fishing boats equipped with wind sails.

“At least the steering wheel is in the middle of the boat so I don’t think anyone will protest about that,” he said in his launching address.

“ As far as any damages to the environment is concerned, in case the environmentalists may decide to protest, the only concern I can think of is the boat runing over jelly fish.”

The Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi however took on a conciliatory note during the week when he conceeded on national television that the protesters are within their rights of freedom of expression to voice their concerns.

The once solid unity of the PM’s ruling Human Rights Protection Party suffered a blow in the last session of Parliament when two of its members resigned in support of the RHD protest.

The third and final reading of the RHD Bill next week will again put severe pressure on an already unstable HRPP cohesion.

Meanwhile the organisers of the RHD Protest have been calling for public support, through paid advertisement on the local media outlets.
