REVIEWING THE POSITIVES : Outspoken opposition MP Lealailepule Rimoni Aiafi.
An outspoken oppostion Member of Parliament is touting the positives that have come out of the Right Hand Drive protest, despite the legislation getting the stamp of approval in Parliament yesterday.
Faleata i Sisifo MP Lealailepule Rimoni Aiafi, believes very strongly that the RHD protest has united the opposition members.
He drew a parallel between the public support reaction to the RHD and the Public Service Association, PSA strike of 1981.
“The Government’s Human Rights Protection Party was born out of the PSA strike, the same is now going to happen with the RHD,” MP Lealailepule told Newsline yesterday.
“This is the start of new changes that are already happening now and will show up in 2011,” he predicted when the country is called to elect a new Government.
“The RHD has shown that the people are ready for change and those changes are coming.”
MP Lealailepule believes that the united stance shown by a once divided opposition members on the RHD is a start towards the buildup of a new and strong opposition that the people have been calling out for.
Under the Electoral Act however it is not possible for a new opposition party to be formed or given recognition in the House, during the current tenure of Parliament.
MPs who want to form a new party and be recognised will have to forfeit their current seats and return to their respective elecorates to chance their hand of returning in a bi-election.
The Samoa Democratic United Party was the only recognised opposition party in the House until a falling out reduced its members to below the officially recognised head count.
But the situation is not a concern to MP Lealailepule.
“We can always come together as a party outside Parliament so we can better organise our starategies and opposition to Government when we’re in the House.”
MP Lealailepule is one of several independent Members who have remained unaffiliated to any political party from the start and will remain so for the duration of the term.
Meanwhile Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailelel Malielegaoi welcomes the formation of a stronger opposition in Parliament.
He believes that the inolvement of independent members in the next general elections is a good thing, but is hopeful that it is not just for the sake of the RHD protest.
“I think this is a positive development,” he told Newsline in an exclusive interview yesterday.
“I do hope they themselves should form together into a party for the next election, of course it is not an easy thing.
“ When it comes to leadership that is where the problem lies, but since the issue has been raised I think it is a healthy development.”
