Admiral Timothy J. Keating, USN Commander of the United States Pacific Command praised the defense efforts of Samoa in the region yesterday.

Keating said in his address yesterday: “It’s a privilege and an honour to come and pay our respects to you as the leader of a country whose been doing so much for peace, stability, your contribution to the regional stability are well known to all of us in the Pacific.”
Keating went on to praise the part that Samoa plays in the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI) through the participation of local Police Officers in the mission.
He also paid tribute to the efforts of Samoa in Peace Keeping worldwide.
“We are grateful for your contribution, additionally your work for the RAMSI mission, is significant your contribution your peace keepers are making throughout the world again are well know and are appreciated,” Keating said yesterday.
The visit by the Pacific Command is the first by Keating and the most significant US armed force presence in the last decade.
Keating who is at the forefront of US armed forces, included defense and military operations in the Pacific region stopped over with his team and crew at 12:00pm yesterday.
According to the US Embassy in Samoa, only the President of the US who is Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces and the
Prime Minister Hon. Tuilaepa Sailele Lupesoliai Malielegaoi thanked the Admiral for his visit and for the invitation to the Samoan Cabinet and selected officers to lunch.





 
“This is an opportunity for Samoa to convey our grateful thanks to the Pacific Command, your usual assistance to Samoa, particularly in time of crisis, the Pacific Command will always be amongst the first to offer emergency assistance,” Tuilaepa said.
He drew attention specifically to the assistance by the US Command during cyclones Ofa and Val.
“Prior to that, your assistance for the 1983 major forest fire, that destroyed much of our forest in Savaii. Samoa also benefits from the Pacific Commands workshop on Pacific security that our people from the Police, Officials and from Foreign Affairs have from time to time been able to attend through your invitations and we are extremely grateful for your assistance,” Tuilaepa said.
According to the US Embassy in Samoa, the US Command is based in Honolulu, Hawai'i on the island of Oahu.
The United States Pacific Command's sphere of control extends from the west coast of the United States mainland to the east coast of Africa (excluding the waters north of 5° S and west of 68° E), encompassing East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Alaska, Madagascar, and Oceania. It also has control over U.S. military operations in the Pacific, including the state of Hawaii, Indian Oceans as well as over forces in Alaska. The main combat power of USPACOM is formed by U.S. Army Pacific, Marine Forces Pacific, U.S. Pacific Fleet, and Pacific Air Forces, all headquartered in Honolulu with component forces stationed throughout the region.
The contingent were in Samoa for three hours before continuing their journey to Australia.
