The Safata Member of Parliament, MP Tuia Letoa has officially resigned from the caucus of independent Members of Parliament who are poised to officially launch in a few weeks time the Tautua Samoa Party.
Newsline yesterday confirmed from the Safata MP himself a letter of resignation handed in to the Tautua Samoa Caucus Chairman, MP Lealailepule Rimoni Aiafi.
“ I have decided to remove myself from being involved in any more of the activities by the caucus to attend to family obligations,” Newsline was told by the MP.
The resignation caught several of the Tautua Samoa Party caucus and other Members of the House by surprise.
Suspicions have been inflamed along the political corridors of Parliament that the MP has had a falling out with others in the party caucus.
The fires of speculations were further fueled by whispery talks that MP Tuia is eager to switch to the Government’s Human Rights Protection Party if they will take him in.
He was alleged to have made overtures to some of the senior and influential members of the HRPP caucus, about being accepted into the party.
All the rumours and speculations were however strongly denied by the Parliamentarian when asked directly by Newsline.
“No I was not involved in any personal differences with any member or members of the caucus, I just wanted to commit more time to the needs of my family.”
MP Tuia also rejected added rumours that he is looking for an opening to cross over to the ruling government Human Rights Protection Party HRPP.
“No that is not true, I have decided to remain an independent member,” he responded with emphasis when asked about the rumours.
The Safata MP resignation is the latest in a series of turns and twists of political party loyalties that started with the Samoa National Democratic Party SNPD, before the messy leadership fallout last year.
The change of leadership and eventually the collapse of the once recognized opposition party gave way to a membership merge of all independent Parliamentarians, to form what is soon to become the Tautua Samoa Party.
MP Tuia has been closely involved in the activities of the build up to the new party up till his sudden decision this week to exit from any more involvement.
The Tautua Samoa Party Chairman MP Lealailepule meanwhile could only confirm the resignation letter by the departing MP.
“Yes I do have MP Tuia’s letter of resignation but we have not yet discussed it in caucus,” Chairman Lealailepule confirmed to Newsline yesterday.
“I should have something to say when we have sat down together as members of the Tautua Samoa party to discusses this issue.”
The new party is officially opening its new headquarters on the second floor of the Ioane Viliamu Building tomorrow.
The official launching of the party is scheduled for next month where the new leader will be officially announced as well.
Once the Tautua Samoa Party is in place the only independent MPs left in Parliament will be the former opposition leader, Le Mamea Ropati and his successor as leader of the SNDP, Asiata Saleimoa Vaai.
….plus MP Tuia Letoa.
I wish the MP would be honest with the public and don't take the "spending time with my family" phrase to bow out without no explaination. I suspect he may have other interior motive, but that's politics! I guess HRPP aint going nowhere!
