LEADING THE WAY : Party interim Chairman MP Lealailepule Rimoni Aiafi

A 2 weeks hunt is officially underway today by the new political group comprising the 12 independent Members of Parliament calling on the public to decide a party name to identify them by.
A public notice went out today for suggestions and recommendations from the public, as part of a national competition set to run over the next 14 days with 30 May as the deadline for all entries.
The name search was the first in the priority list of things to do the political grouping promised, when they recently banded as independent opposition MPs in the wake of national uproar over the controversial Right Hand Drive road switch.
The activities of the soon to be named political party is being co-ordinated by an interim executive, chaired by the Faleata i Sisifo MP Lealailepule Rimoni Aiafi.
“We need to establish our identity now, so we can start organizing a structure and set out our goals and objectives as a party,” MP Lealailepule told Newsline yesterday.
The group was given a scare by the Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, in a Ministerial Statement calling on the Speaker of the House for a clarification of  Standing Orders in relations to the affiliation of members to new political parties.
“We studied the Standing Orders when we were looking to form ourselves into a party outside of Parliament and there was nothing to be concerned with,” MP Lealailepule explained.
“This was further confirmed by the Speaker’s ruling, but we are not interested in being recognised  in Parliament, we wanted to form a party so we can organize ourselves better and effectively as a group during when we are in the House.”
The interim Chairman promised noticeable changes in the quality of opposition they are capable of mounting against Government once they become properly organized.
“Once we have a name, the next step will be to have a national party executive selected from our supporters to organize and run the party efficiently.
“Our team approach will be reflected in the way we approach issues debated in the House.”
MP Lealailepule added that the set up being organized for the party will be similar to the way it is done by established parties in New Zealand and Australia.
The hunt for a new party name is being extended outside of Samoa to allow for overseas based Samoans to contribute and become part of the building of a strong and effective opposition party.
