BATTLE TIRED : Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi in his office yesterday afternoon.

The Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi has played down the passing of the controversial Right Hand Drive legislation in Parliament yesterday as a win for Government.
“If there is anyone who should claim this to be a victory, it is the people who will benefit, they are the general public who will now be able to access cars from relatives in New Zealand and also Australia,” PM Tuilaepa told Newsline yesterday.
“ The very people who objected shall benefit enormously as well from the procurement of cars that are cheaper from Japan, particularly second hand cars where Japan is the biggest market in the world.”
The benefits the PM alluded to, formed what the Government aruged about at the start of the long and protracted RHD road switch that has brought hefty division in public opinion and two protest marches to Parliament.
While the PM’s reaction appears to be aimed towards the start of a reconciliatory process for the divided country, he heaped a lot of praise on the democratic process that was involved in the whole RHD debate.
“What I am particularly happy about is the opportunity to demonstrate to countries in our own part of the world, that we had to go through this democratic process to try to get through issues of major national importance.”
He noted how other countries in the region ‘do not tolerate opposition views or allow protest marches but on behalf of my own party (Human Rights Protection Party) I spoke about my views of freedom of expression for the people.”
The RHD Bill went through the third and final reading yesterday and was met with with surprisingly loud vocal opposition in the House.
The opposing views however were swamped when a show of hands was called to decide two sensitive sections of the bill that included the switch to the right hand side of the road.
There were several amendments made on the original bill including the extension from the orignal proposal for 8-year-old second hand vehicles to be allowed entry to Samoa to be extended to 12 year old cars.
Prliament will hold their final session today where a few remaining loose ends in the new legislation are expected to be tidied up and given the final stamp of approval.
“Now that we have eventually come to the end, our next focus is to work on the details for the general safety of our people, and that is where we all have to work together.
“Overall the experience has been exciting in the sense that we have been able to debate with open minds the pros and cons and that we also tried to respond with very cool heads the highlights of the major benefits to our people.

So how cheap will the cars gonna be
written by Toyota, April 18, 2008
Unless this switch will cause the prices of so called second hand cars to be less than $4,000, I will forever hold a grudge against this govt.
So is there anyone in the cabinet who has a gut to say how cheap the cars are going to be???

we need answers and actions...not some bullc... and threats against the people.
It doesn't matter who the people voted for to get to parliament, it is how those who got voted in behave and represent their people in all honesty and good faith. Cause all I can see now are losses of trust and votes in the next election. So good luck to the current mps

So despite the protest and the dubious reason for switching side. The prime minister is becoming more of a joke. Just the introduction of street lights in Apia several years back, got so many accidents in the early months. But the introduction of this change will have a greater impact and it will cost precious lives.

Imagine the numbers of lives that will be lost through accidents when the road switch. PM and the ones vote for the change will be blame. Angry people will resolute to violence when their love once will lost their lives just because the PM has his hidden agendas.
