RHD Protest March Decided In Samoa

Video Interview with Toleafoa Solomona To’ailoa A protest march to Parliament is on, for the 17 of December, to show public opposition to the Government’s proposed Right Hand Drive RHD policy. A resounding yes, plus an enthusiastic show of hands, from the large turnout at the EFKS Hall yesterday, decided the path of objection to take. Between 800 –1000 people attended the open forum, mainly representing the business community involved in the motor vehicle industry. Cars were parked all along the Mulinu’u road, when the car park outside the Hall ran out of space before the forum was scheduled to start at 12.00 mid-day. Representatives from the various business sectors and non Governmental organisations, lined up to make presentations, but the crowd was turning restless after only a couple of speakers, the call for opinions was quickly switched to the floor. “It seems the majority of the people here were already aware of the reasons and were eager mainly to know what action to take,” lawyer and forum convener, Toleafoa Solomona To’ailoa, noted afterwards. The decision to stage a protest march was obvious from the general reaction and it was a known conclusion before the question was finally put to a vote. A committee to organize the demonstration is now set up to prepare for the planned protest march when Parliament is in session on the 17 of December.
