Prime Minister Tuilaepa Lupesoliai Sailele Malielegaoi told Parliament last week that he would not waste his time addressing some of the issues raised by his counterpart, Asiata Sale’imoa Vaai.
“That is because no matter how I try to explain them,” the PM said, “Asiata will always want to have things his way. But our beliefs differ by miles.”
Tuilaepa said if Asiata can make it to office, then he can implement his beliefs.
“Right now we are practicing our (government) beliefs,” Tuilaepa added.
The Prime Minister was responding to a claim raised by Asiata about government rejecting those applying for vacant government chief executive positions because of their political beliefs.
Tuilaepa said such claims were nonsense.
“I have never heard of such practices,” Tuilaepa said. “Since the beginning of time, the government has never rejected anyone applying for government jobs because of their beliefs. Perhaps Asiata can practice that if he comes to office (in power).”
MP from Falealupo, Aeau Peniamina took the floor to ask whether the government was considering using former government CEOs as consultants.
In response, Tuilaepa says it has always been the government’s policy to utilize these personnel’s expertise only in their fields of specialties.
“Even if your field is taking the fue and to’oto’o and stand outside the Lands and Titles Court.”
Other issues addressed by the Prime Minister included calls by some MPs to stop relying on foreign aids and working schemes which saw a number of Samoans leaving the country to work overseas.
“These views are based on weak faith,” Tuilaepa said adding that Samoa needed these aids to avoid high taxes.
“If these aids ceased and our developments are high, then the only option there to fund these developments is by putting up the taxes. That means more heavy burdens on our people.”
Tuilaepa said this was not the government’ motive.
“Only an ill led country that refuses to use these aids for its development.”

On the issue of Samoans moving overseas for work under scheme’s such as the New Zealand Aid’s seasonal scheme and the United Nations Peacekeeping, Tuilaepa said this will not only benefit those moving overseas and their families but the country as a whole.
He said these people works overseas and contributes to the economy through remittances. He said the government of Australia has also intended to start a similar scheme.
In a less serious matter, Tuilaepa advised his fellow MPs not to be “too serious” with the issues debated in Parliament.
“That’s why some MPs end up with high blood pressure,” he said. “Take some time to laugh things off.”

Running a country is a laugh?
written by The Samoan fella, January 20, 2008
I guess I will approach this story seriously rather then attempt to stimulate discussion and/or debate after all we are talking about those who are running Samoa and those who wish to run Samoa. From reading this story I have come to the conclusion that these 2 power mongers are more interested in their own personal agendas then that of the voters they are supposed to be representing. Samoa can be and will be the jewel of the pacific when this ideology or focus on self is diminished and the people, culture and future, (The big picture) becomes the motivating factor for those in power. Culture, Politics and Religion are 3 different things and should remain so! A lot of the articles and news I receive regarding Samoa "Government" is lost in a Grey area of Culture, Politics and Religion and are played against each other to get agreement, consent or support.

I will go more into the dangers of receiving foreign aid because I believe it, foreign aid, holds us back quite a lot! Australia's recent $100,000.00's dollars toward Samoa coming up with community incentives to reduce carbon emissions is a bigger laugh then Tuilaepa Lupesoliai Sailele Malielegaoi suggests and ALL POLITICIANS SHOULD TAKE THEIR JOB SERIOUSLY! Because Australia creates almost 10 times the carbon emissions as Samoa yet here they are gifting us with money to what?.......By our silence!! Samoa will never be able to be critical of Australia’s carbon emissions, NEVER! Is that something to laugh at?.....Take a look at all the foreign aid Samoa has received and check it out......

Reading the comments of Tuilaepa Lupesoliai Sailele Malielegaoi and trying to gauge the sought of leader he really is dumb founds me....Running a country is not a joke!!

Regards: Samoan Fella
