HRPP Whip and Deputy Speaker, MP La'auli Polataivao Fosi

Public opinion against the controversial road switch policy is providing some measure of discomfort for Government Members of Parliament.
The Government’s Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP) whip, and Deputy Speaker, MP La’auli Polataivao Fosi, admitted yesterday that it is a struggle to keep a low profile from public reaction.
“ We’re trying to hide,” says the Human Rights Protection Party Whip, and Speaker of the House, MP La’auli Polataivao Fosi.
“Everywhere you walk people will make comments to you about the Right Hand Drive, and it is especially difficult when other members are called courageous,” he continued, implying that those in the party who support the issue are not.
MP La’auli confirmed the division of opinions at the HRPP’s recent caucus, but felt it is a freedom the party has always encouraged in its members.
“I too was against this policy but I am giving the Prime Minister the benefit of the doubt, because this is something he did not wake up and decided to do.”
He agreed with speculations there is a hidden agenda behind the PM Tuilaepa’s stance on the policy, but suspects that whatever is behind this road policy, Parliament is where everything will come out.
“I’m sure the Prime Minister will come out and reveal whatever is behind this policy when he thinks the time is right to do so.”
The MP argued that public uproar against this one issue has made everyone forget the many other good things Government has done.

He was not critical however of public reaction or other members in the HRPP caucus speaking out against the policy.
“ The freedom of the people to express their views and opinions is their right, so too are the HRPP members who do not agree with the policy, and that is a good thing.”
MP La'auli was also supportive of the way the PASS protest is being organised with out any political agenda behind it.
“ I have nothing against public reaction and it is good to see the way it is being organised without any political influence involved.”
PASS Chairman, Toleafoa Solomona To’ailoa, has applauded the stance taken by some of the HRPP members at the recent caucus , when they stood up against the policy.
“ This is the HRPP returning to the roots of democracy it started with,” Toleafoa said last week.
“This protest is not against Government, Prime Minister or the HRPP, this is about the decision to switch to the ‘wrong side’ of the road.
PASS has been active since the organising committee was set up about a week ago, to win public support and for people to come out next Monday to join the march to Parliament.
