Two Rugby League coaches from Australia are currently in Samoa to provide league training recipes that may just earn Samoa a win in the upcoming SPG.

The two are in Samoa to share their knowledge of how to play the game to our local Rugby League players and coaches.

Danny Holmes and Peter Paul are part of a joint venture between the Australia Rugby League and the Samoa Rugby League.

Their main purpose is to assist the Samoa Rugby League in any way they can to get and establish two round competition of thirteen a side up and going.

They have come up with the best way they believe they can achieve this, by educating our coaches and referees to international standard and give them the same knowledge that the players in the NRL and the British Rugby League have.

They have so far worked with the coaches and referees in what they believe are the best way to tackle league development.

According to them, they can achieve this by teaching each individual coach the skills but with the philosophy behind it.

They will then be able to hand that education on to another 15 to 20 players in their squad, so it’s practically to get the message to the other players.

This initial visit is a nine day trip, but it is an ongoing commitment from the Australia Rugby League.

Danny Holmes and Peter Paul will be coming back to Samoa at around the same time each year, in order to get our Rugby league players up to standard before the SPG.

Mr. Holmes says there is no time limit as to when the coaches will be ready, “it will depend on the level of their attitude to learning and also their commitment to handing over the information to their players.”

From what they have seen already they are impressed.

They have already coached our nine a side squad that are about to participate in the SPG, and Mr. Holmes says, he has been more impressed with them than any other place where he has coached especially in their ability to retain the information he gave them and execution throughout the game situation.

He trained them Friday night for their trials Saturday morning, in results he couldn’t believe how well they executed it under pressure and on the field.

Mr. Holmes says they are not here to form a competition with other sporting bodies.

“Samoa Rugby League is not forming to eliminate the Rugby Union” said Mr. Holmes.

“Under no circumstances are we trying to come in and take the place of these sports, we just want to come in and co-exist with these people to give the players another option.”

“Samoa used to be a strong Rugby League nation and with the World Cup coming in Australia 2008, I wanted to do the best, so that Samoa can take part in that World Cup” said Mr. Holmes.

Their idea is to get them as smart as their opposition will be in the World Cup 2008.

To qualify for the World Cup they need to beat Lebanon and the United States of America, which both believe is achievable by the Samoan’s.
