The Australian Government's travel advisory and consular assistance service has made strong warnings about Samoa to Australian visitors.

In the latest issue on www.smartaveller.gov.au the Australian Government advised their residents to consider travel arrangements to Samoa in light of the South Pacific Games.

Smartraveller states: “Samoa will host the South Pacific Games from 25 August to 8 September 2007. With increased numbers of visitors to Samoa during the Games and in the preceeding weeks, it is expected that hotel accommodation will be very limited. It is also expected that there will be heavy demands placed on tourist related services.”The website which is geared towards Australians planning to travel warns: “We advise you to be alert to your own security in Samoa.”The site states: “petty crime, particularly theft, is prevalent in Samoa.” It also warns: “Burglaries are sometimes accompanied by violence. Violent assaults and shootings have also been reported.”Driving in Samoa is identified on by Smartraveller as “dangerous, particularly at night, due to insufficient street lighting, and poor and deteriorating road conditions.”

It goes on to state that many motor vehicles are not well maintained and the standard of driving is poor.
Smartraveller also advised Australians on stray dogs: “Stray, sometimes vicious, dogs are common in Samoa. There have been reports of dog attacks in suburban areas and on beaches outside of hotel boundaries.”The site also specifically indicates that: “Homosexual acts are illegal in Samoa.” Smartraveller advises Australians to be aware of local laws and penalties “including ones that appear harsh by Australian standards, do apply.”It states that if you are arrested or jailed, “the Australian Government will do what it can to help you but we can't get you out of trouble or out of jail.”The advisory was reissued yesterday online.
