CEO breaks silence over faulty facilities PDF Print E-mail

The Chief Executive Officer of the South Pacific Games Authority, Fonoti Manoniamanu Etuale Ioane, told Newsline that some SPG facilities were not built for torrential rainfall.

Over Independence Week, back in the first week of June, Samoa held the Samoa Games, which for many of the young athletes was a great opportunity to display their talents in hopes to be selected for Team Samoa.

However, this year the Samoa Games had an added focus, to test out the facilities for the up and coming South Pacific Games.

Unfortunately, some of the facilities showed they were not up to standard when the rain came bucketing down and they began to leak.

One area that were particularly affected was the squash courts inside the gym at Faleata which was leaking from the facilities roofing and some competitors ended up with slight bruising due to the slippery courts.

Fonoti has finally spoken out about the situation and admitted that the buildings were leaking but says it has all been amended now and will be fine for the SPG.

Fonoti explained that because of torrential rain coming from all different angles, which went in through the turbine expelleation causing the buildings to leak in the way that it did.

This left Newsline wondering whether (or not) the Contractors and SPGA took into account Samoa’s unpredictable weather when constructing the building.

The CEO has though ensured that the buildings have now been repaired and are ready for the South Pacific Games.

He has also reassured that the facilities will be available for future events for many years to come.

“They will stay forever.”

Lets all hope there is no torrential rain during the Games in August/September.
