The Safe Games Campaign Committee have confirmed that each athlete will receive eight condoms each in their SPG kits upon arrival.

One of the major issues hoped to be avoided at the up coming South Pacific Games is the spread of Sexually Transmitted Infections.

The Samoa Aids Foundation has taken the initiative along with other organizations by setting up a Safe Sex campaign.

Nelly Whitman of the Samoa Aids Foundation has clarified the plans that have already been outlined for the games.

She says: “There will be bags given out to each athlete upon arrival, each containing eight condoms.”

The Red Cross will be assisting in distributing extra condoms to the public during the games at both Faleata Sporting Complex, and Apia Park.

She confirmed that right now there they have already stocked up 50,000 condoms with a few more to come.

The idea of the campaign is to promote safe sex and to protect people from sexually transmitted diseases.

A group of peer educators that work for SAF have also been trained to help out during the games.

According to one member of the group, after the previous SPG held in Suva Fiji, the number of those with STDs increased dramatically.

He says this is the major reason why they have decided to focus on setting up ways to discuss and address the issue so a similar pattern would not be repeated after the upcoming games.

These organizations have therefore made it their responsibilities to inform the public during the games of the effects of such deadly diseases.
