The Softball Fields at the Horse Track were officially opened on Friday afternoon, the fourth final South Pacific Games Facility opening this week.

The project had a total cost of only SAT$172,000 funded by the Government of Samoa and took just two months to be completed.

The construction was done by Triple T construction.

Faumuina Tiatia Liuga, Minister of the South Pacific Games Authority, announced the facilities open with the cutting of the ribbon and shortly after the Minister’s and guests were in front row seats of a softball match against the men’s and women’s teams.

Two fields have been made one for the men’s competition and one for the females’ competition.

There are both a female and male team representing Samoa for the South Pacific Games, says Maryann Lameko, Treasurer for the Samoa Softball Federation.

The Samoan teams which have fourteen players in each squad are made up of majority local players and their preparations for the games began last year.

“The final squad has been together for two months,” says Ms. Lameko, “since the squad was picked.”

Ms. Lameko said both teams are hoping for Gold at SPG, “We all hope for the ultimate and to get what we are aiming for, to achieve our goals and get the gold medal.”
