Eighteen year old Jobenz Manoa of Alafua is yet another promising young squash player for the up coming South Pacific Games.

Jobenz says he has been preparing for this since he was a kid and wants nothing more than to wear that gold medal around his neck and represent his beloved Samoa.

Although he is only a reserve for the team he says that at any point of the Games he can be asked to come in and play at any stage so he must always be prepared.

He says his training schedule is very tight especially in the build up to the games and does not have time for other social aspects of his life.

“It’s all for the love of the sport,” he explains, “I must always be prepared for anything that could happen during the next six weeks, who knows one of the players could become injured and I must step up to the plate.”

He adds that this is the first time he has ever competed in such an event and he hopes that his debut will be a promising one.

This SPG will be a learning curve, he says, but he is very excited about the experience he is about to encounter.

The promising young lad says, he is ready to take on the games, and right now, the only thing he needs to work on is his fitness.

Team Manager, Rod Brown, speaks very highly of the young player saying even though he is young he has really come up through the junior squad in the past year and by next SPG he will be ready to fire.

“We were particularly pleased when they picked Jobenz.”

“Like Norman Weetzal, [who has been playing for Samoa since 1983] Jobenz has 20 years left in him, if he keeps fit and injury free,” says Mr. Brown.

Jobenz cannot wait until the Games so he can improve on his skills and really experience international competition.
