The Samoan Women’s Squash team bounced back from first game nerves to take out a Bronze Medal in the Team’s event.

The team consisting of Samantha Marfleet, Deidre Fuimaono, Alyson Sefo and Peka Sialaoa were defeated in their first match by Defending Champions Papua New Guinea.

Alyson Sefo says the team showed signs of nervousness during that opening match.

“We played as if we were still nervous,” she explained, “We did not play as well as we should have.”

After being out classed by the Papua New Guinean’s, the Samoan’s bounce back from a tough defeat to grab victory in their second match of the day.

With a win against the Cook Islands the team managed to pick up their spirits smashing the visitors, 5-1.

For many of the team this is their first South Pacific Games.

Deidre Fuimaono told Newsline the team really picked up their game in the second match of the day and are hoping to come out of the tournament with a medal.

The second day of competition saw Samoa play a tough game against Fiji.

With a two all draw at the end of the matches, the out come of the match came down to a decider of which Samoa came out on top.

Their final game was against New Caledonia and because of where each team stood on the points table; the match became a decider to who won Silver and who had to settle for Bronze.

Papua New Guinea had already secured themselves the Gold Medal.

Unfortunatly New Caledonia came out victorious claiming the Silver Medal.

However, since the majority of the team are new to international competitions, Samoa has done well to achieve a medal.

Watch out for team Samoa during the singles and doubles competition this week.
