MDG

The Millenium Development Goals have been the talk of the town since the torch relay for the South Pacific Games.

As Goodwill Partners for the XIIIth South Pacific Games, the United Nations System in the Pacific was invited to assign eight runners to run for the SPG Torch Relay.

However, in a move by the United Nations to encourage involvement of key organizations that it felt characterized national efforts towards achievement of the eight Millennium Development Goals for Samoa, therefore eight organizations were invited to nominate one representative for their sector and the United Nations on the SPG torch relay.

The Millennium Development Goals are eight goals set to be achieved by 2015 that act in response to the world’s main development challenges.

The MDGs are drawn from the actions and targets contained in the Millennium Declaration that was adopted by 189 nations and signed by 147 heads of state and governments including Samoa and 13 other Pacific Island Nations during the UN Millennium Summit in September 2000.

The 8 MDGs are as follows as well as the various representatives during the SPG Torch Relay on Friday 24th and Saturday 26th August.

Goal     1: Halving extreme poverty and hunger, represented by Sa Utailesolo of the Disabled Community at Nuanua o le Alofa.

Goal     2: Achieving universal primary education, represented by Pomade Taulealo, a Primary School Teacher from Vailuu Tai Primary School.

Goal     3: Promoting gender equality, represented by Abel Caine, Charmina Saili, and Martin Anae of the United Nations Communications Group.

Goal     5: Reducing maternal mortality by three-quarters, represented by Dr.Tile Ah Leong of the Doctors’ Association.

Goal     6: Reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS, malaria and TB, represented by Peati Iupeli of the Samoa Aids Foundation.

Goal     7: Ensuring environmental sustainability, represented by Maselino Lafaele of the Samoa Umbrella for Non Government Organization.
