Torch RelayIn the early hours of Friday morning 24th of August, seven representatives from a wide scope of non-government organizations and professions waited patiently over a stretch of 8 kilometers between Leufisa and USP Alafua for their turn to carry the torch of dreams for the South Pacific Games 2007.  The relay itself was an outstanding event, which in turn created unforgettable moments such as when Dr Tile Ah Leong representing the Doctor’s Association ran in front of the Tupua Meaole Hospital and exchanged the torch with Sa Utailesolo the representative of Nuanua le Alofa in front of the Loto Taumafai School.   The distance between Loto Taumafai and the Outrigger Hotel may have been the shortest of the UN’s torch relay route but it was the most moving and remarkable. Loto Taumafai students lined the road to the Outrigger Hotel and with much difficulty but with delight and joy, ran the torch relay towards the Outrigger from which the torch was handed over to Peati Iupeli, one of the bravest women in Samoa who is championing awareness programmes to prevent HIV and AIDS.  Peati, to the cheers of the Ministry of Education staff in front of Teuila Hotel and the SPG Athletes ran towards SDA at Lalovaea where another notable Samoan individual who has contributed considerably to press freedom in Samoa and in the region, Savea Sano Malifa was waiting to exchange with Peati.   The torch was then handed over to Pomade Taulealo who was representing teachers from the rural community.  Pomade ran from Sinamoga Bridge to Moamoa where he was literally crowded by enthusiastic fans – one of which was an elderly Samoan father with the Samoan flag draped across his back.

The torch was then handed over to Maselino Lafaele of SUNGO who ran with two Solomon Island Athletes to USP where the UN’s route ended.

The final and 8th runner for the UN was Afioga Solamalemalo Keneti Sio, who represented the Parliamentarians in the relay.Solamalemalo ran the last leg of the torch relay on Saturday before the opening ceremony from the UN Compound at Matautu-uta to the Apia Park. Solamalemalo   is a former Manu Samoa Representative and was proudly nominated by the Speaker of the House to show that Parliamentarians are also sports people and proud to promote the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
