Unpredictable Weather Concerns at SPG

Since the official opening of the new gym at Faleata last week, concerns have been made aware about the South Pacific Games Authorities decision to build the complex open-style.

With Samoa’s unpredictable weather, some are worried that the athletes, officials and spectators may be rained on should the weather unexpectedly make a turn for the worse.

The sporting complex which will play host to Judo, Karate, Power lifting and Wrestling during the Games in August/September was built with Samoa’s tropical climate in mind said SPGA Chief Executive Officer, Fonoti Manoniamanu Etuale Ioane.

Given that Samoa can reach temperatures of above 30 degrees, it was believed that this was the most suitable design for the gymnasium.

However, Fonoti has assured Newsline there are measures put in place should rain appear during the competition.

“We can put shutters up around the outside if it rains,” said Fonoti, who continued by saying, “we had to cater for climate conditions.”

They will be up during the games just in case, says Fonoti.

“During the games shutters will be going around the sides of the gym.”
