Sports such as Boxing and Weightlifting should be given priority, according to the Honourable Toleafoa Apulu Fa’afisi.

“Over the years our Boxers have shown that Samoa can be up there at the international level so it is up to us to support them.”
As a loyal promoter of the sport spanning some 40 years, the Minister of Police, Prisons and the Fire Services has donated a handsome trophy to be used for the ‘Frankies Champ of Champs’ event from 11-14 December this year.
He also donated the Boxing trophy which is used in the Tri-Nations Boxing event which ius held between Upolu, Savaii and Tutuila four times a year..
During the trophy presentation on Tuesday to the president of the Samoa Amateur Boxing Association (SABA) Togatalima Fa’afouina Milford, Toleafoa spoke of his involvement in Boxing in the early days and his strong belief in its place as a vehicle to put Samoan athletes in the world spotlight.
My involvement began in the late 1960’s when the A’ana Movie Stadium was also used for Boxing. In fact I took a Boxing team to Tahiti in the 1970’s and as the years have gone by I have continued my interest and my support of Boxing financially or with the donation of trophies,” he said.
“This is one of the sports that Samoa is good at. In the past we have got Gold medals and this is still the case.
“I also want to support my ‘brother’ here,” he said, referring to Togatalima.
Future business plans by Toleafoa’s family include the building of a multi-purpose hall which will likely include a Boxing ring.
Togatalima said the donation reflected the kind of person Toleafoa is.
“He is loyal to Boxing because of his love of the sport and to his friends.”
“SABA is very thankful for this continuing support - not only the monetary donations and trophies but for his technical advice over the years.”
