SURE MEDALIST: Vaitele Soifale celebrates a semi-final win that will line him up for a gold medal and more importantly a trip to the Beijing Olympics, if he can overcome his team mate, Farani Tavui.

BOXING’S WISE MEN: (l – r) Lautapa’a Ofe, Sung Chan Chui and Luafalealo Vitale.

Three out of seven Samoan boxers were already into the gold medal round of the Oceania Boxing tournament  when we went to press last night.
The boxers won their scheduled bouts after yesterday’s  first of two semi final session at the Faleata Boxing Gym.
Five more were lined up for the second session last night.
Team Samoa is finding the Oceania qualifying rounds a struggle as some of the more promising local champions like Warren Fuiava and Samuelu Faialaga fell in the preliminary rounds.
Team Samoa trainer, Luafalealo Vitale, admitted disappiointment with his boxers form, when compared to the South Pacific Games last year.
“They were much more fitter and sharper last year,” he conceded. ‘I think maybe we spent too much time on the running and too little on the sparring in our programme of training.”
Team Manager, Sung Chan Chui, felt that the uncertainty over who the host country for the tournament will be, affected team selection and preparations for the rest of the team.
“ We had to rush in a second team only when it was confirmed that Samoa is to be the host country,” he complained.
Light heavyweights, Vaitele Soifale (pictured) and Farani Tavui will guarantee a gold and  silver medal for Samoa when they square up against each other in the finals today.
Sasi Sasulu goes after the gold medal in the light welterweight division, from the 3 Samoans who qualified yesterday.
Last night’s semifinal results were not available when we went to press.
Team Australia has dominated most of the divisions with their boxers holding good form as they assert their winning skills through the preliminary rounds.
‘They are a strong team but our boys can match them if they had the same fitness level and sharpness we know they are caapable of,” team manager Chan Chui added.
