Ele Opeloge was a kilogram away from winning Samoa her first Olympic medal, and according to a report in the United Kingdom,
Guardian...”the Pacific islander can take comfort from the celebrity status on her at home..”
At the age of 23 , Opeloge is relatively young in the sport of weightlifting. She has another 4 years of growing and maturing in her sport by the time the next Olympics comes around.
Opeloge, who carried Samoa’s flag at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Games, let out a yelp and lifted 145kg in the clean and-
jerk, prompting the competition’s commentator to say: “Nice and easy, yes.”
Watched by a crowd that included big-muscled Pacific islanders and cheered on by cries of “Samoa!”, Opeloge went on to lift
150kg.
But she failed in her attempt to lift 152kg to lose out on the bronze Ele is the first to take Samoa this close to winning a medal in the biggest sporting event in the world.
She has a heroine's welcome waiting on her return.
