Manu Samoa Coach – Tuala Niko Palama.

If rugby was a game played between 30 and 40 minutes, the Manu Samoa will have brought the World Cup home by now.
This is how confident the new Manu Samoa Coach, Tuala Lepale Niko Palamo, is of the natural skills of Samoan rugby players.
“Skills wise our boys are very talented, but lasting the full 80 minutes has always been the problem with Samoan players in the past and right up to now,” Coach Tuala mused.
“It’s not as if the boys are not training hard of course they do. We’ve even had some professional trainers come over to train our players but somehow we always remain a team good enough for 30 to 40 minutes.”
The famous laid back attitude of Samoans is a possible chink that has made Coach Tuala analyse seriously the influence of traditional culture on players attitude.
He believes the Samoan culture has a direct connection with the ability of players to play brilliantly in the first half, only to fade out badly in the second 40 minutes of the game.
“We monitor our local boys who play overseas, and they become stars in the write ups they get while playing for other teams.
“When they turn up for the Manu Samoa they seem to fall back to the same problems again.”
The battle ahead for Coach Tuala, involves changing the attitudes of the players towards training, and to work out specialized training for players.
“We have this thing with our players that when we say training starts at 12.00, they will come in at 12.05 and expect to start preparing by then.
‘When the coach says training at 12.00 it means that everyone is changed and warmed up so that they are ready to train by 12.00pm.”
Working out specific training programmes to better prepare players for their role is a priority for the coach.
“Scrum props for example are not expected to sprint 100 meters, in real rugby the most they will run is 5 meters. What he needs then is to concentrate his training on is his explosive speed, because he needs that for the kind of short yardage he is supposed to run.”
Coach Tuala has been checking out the local rugby talents by way of holding Manu Samoa trials in Savaii firstly and then Upolu a weekend ago.
He made it clear to the players that the trails does not mean only local players will be considered, as there are overseas players to look at as well.
“About 100 players turned up in Savaii and a whole lot more in Upolu, and as far as talents go I can honestly say they are already at the Manu Samoa level.
“But talent alone is not going to get you into the team, there are other important commitments as well, like general fitness.”
Coach Tuala says none of the trialists were able to play up to 30 minutes at the pace they were looking for.
The Pacific Cup in June will be the first test for Coach Tuala and his coaching staff, and he is hoping that they should be able to come up with a competitive team by then.
Overseas based players who want to be in the team are asked to make the commitment by turning up to play in Samoa at least 4 weeks before the Pacific Cup.
He is prepared to make allowances for players who will be tied up with playing contracts, but he would still prefer to see them play to be considered.
‘We have a competition where a selected team from Upolu versus Savaii,, leading up to the Pacific Cup and I want them to play in any of those teams to be considered.”

Mulder and Scully could solve this mystery with their eyes shut.

I dont think theres anything mysterious about it. Straight up common sense will tell u. Super fit athletes can run/play/jump/scrum/whatever for 80 minutes. Have u seen the All Black players up close? They look like streamlined runners. Not an inch of fat on them. When u build a base of fitness thru long slow distance running ( or other cardio activity) - u can work from there to develop any other sports requirement. Manu Samoa need to get their butts out there every morning and run 5 to 10k a day. 6 days a week. Doesnt matter what position u play - u still need the fitness which can only be developed with consistent cardio etc. Natural talent and skill will only get u so far. Theres too many big ( translation overweight and underfit) players on our team.
It's all in TEAM MORALE too

Sao lelei running man. No mystery about it. Sounds like excuses are int he books already. Sport is sport you can't play half heartedly. One must train hard in order to be at the top of their game. I suggest to Coach Palamo that maybe he should re-examine the team morale. If guys show up after the specified starting time then of course there's no respect shown and no determination. I think it all starts from the top. If the boys see that the coach and management are serious and determined then there are no excuses to be slack. I think the excuse of the culture is a bit ridiculous so why do Samoan boys in the Super 14 do so well. Moreover diet and fitness should be stressed. Teach the boys that what they eat make up their bodies. And no joke nutrition is very important in sport. If they eat fasipuaa lololo and falai pisupo every night than of course that will also hinder their progress and fitness. All these aspects need to be addressed. And most of all the boys should be EMPOWERED that their fitness and progress in the game is up to them. Give them the tools so they can better themselves and not treat them like kids. The more they are TOLD to do things I think the more they revert to being passive and not take their training seriously and be responsible. Anyway I wish Coach Palamo all the best with the trials. My hopes are that it's fair and that the SRU are behind him 100% and not 35% like they've done in the past. All the best to our team.
Look no further

Here's my two cents: One suggestion I would give the coaching staff is to, may be, rent one of the local fautasis and use it as part of their training regiments. Row four miles out at various speeds and four miles back into Apia harbor, say, three times a week (Mon. Wed. Fri.) either early morning or evening sessions, would go a long way to build fitness in the Manu Samoa squad. Of course this is beside their on-field drills and practices during the preparation season before the tournaments. And I suggest that they implement this sort of training as soon as possible.
It's interesting that we can play any elite team from around the world in the 7s, and even win it, but don't last long in the 8o minute game. I'm so glad we're talking about this right now. The issue of the fitness of Manu Samoa, and all Samoan people, should be a matter of greater importance to the government that pushing to change the side of the road we should drive in. And our collective attitude about fitness, good diet, and good health must be matters of national concern - not just for Manu Samoa players. And while coach Toala is at it, why not get all our politicians and the Prime Minister to go along for training sessions so they can lose wieght as well?
