‘FANATIK’ SUPPORTERS: Fans In San Diego Cheer Manu Samoa Sevens
Who said Manu Samoa doesn’t have fans in the United States?
Well we could be excused for thinking that because rugby after all “aint” a popular sport there.
But the fact of the matter is that there are Manu Samoa fans in the US and not only there’s quiet a few of them there, they are passionate about their team – the Manu Samoa.
They call themselves the Manu Fanatiks and they have been following the Manu Samoa sevens team ever since the International Rugby Board gave the US the hosting rights to one of the legs of the IRB International Sevens Circuit in 2004.
“We call ourselves the Manu Fanatiks,” wrote Taeotaua, a member of the Manu Fanatiks fan group, in an email.
The fan group is made up of mainly Samoans residing in the US namely those from the Los Angeles areas. Taeotaua said since they first started out, more people are joining the group.
“Our group has grown in size since 2004 and each year we get louder and prouder,” she continued. “This year we had 3 from Hawai’i, 1 from Vancouver, Canada, 2 from Arizona, 1 from Ft Hood Texas, 1 from Las Vegas and the rest of the core from LA.”
Taeotaua said since the IRB Circuit arrived in the US, they’ve always geared themselves up to cheer on the boys in blue.
“We believe that we can inspire the team through cheer and we are very fanatical about it,” she said. “We organize every yr after the games and plan everything from tshirt theme to banner theme to actual cheer songs and we enjoy every second of it.”
She said seeing Manu Samoa sevens playing their hearts out for their country makes the experience worthwile.
“Their performance makes everything we do worth it.”
Despite our sevens boys losing out in the semi finals of the San Diego Sevens to South Africa last weekend, the Manu Fanatiks believed they our boys played good.
“Overall the boys played well,” the Manu Fanatik admitted. “They were able to win out in a challenging pool which included powers Australia and Fiji.”
She added all Manu fans we’re proud of what they saw from the Galumalemana Rudolf Moores’ team.
“Though we came up short and lost in the semi’s against South Africa, we kept our heads up high because we are proud of what the boys accomplished.”
Taeotaua assured Manu Samoa sevens that no matter what the outcome, they will always be Manu Fanatiks.
“We want Manu Samoa to know WIN, LOSE OR TIE” [you] have [our] 100% support.”
