The Manu Samoa were crushed by the All Blacks 101-14 in the test game played at Taranaki New Zealand last night.
The Manu Samoa tried their best but could not withstand the more technically polished All Blacks.
Uale Mai stood out as the Manu Samoa player of the game.Uale Mai scored the first try and converted it in the first half. In the second half Uale Mai again had a hand in setting up the second try by Alafoti Siliva.

The All Blacks will now prepare for the next tri nations test against the Wallabies next week in Australia.

In Fiji, the Samoan Under 19 team were edged out by the Fijians 14-16 at the FORU Championships. At half time the Fijians were ahead 16-7. The Samoans tried to get back into the game in the second half with a Iosefo Tapusua converted try. Unfortunately the Samoan fullback Leleisiuao was not having a good day with his kicking when he missed two penalty kicks in the last quarter of the game.

Cricket score?
written by Lealiifano., September 03, 2008
What was the game plan coach?Where was the defense? Were there any defensive drills during training?Coach !!!there more questions for you to answer after this game.Youve already had several games in the Pacific cup at our disposal and I did not see any structure or direction to the team...
And what happened to some of our players?Im sure they all heard the referee and his calls...very poor discipline.
Come on Manu...Need good, solid set pieces...patch up the defense....might need a defensive coach.... and then we can throw the game open with our unique brand of entertaining attacking rugby.Pride is always there but it doesnt give us the result everytime...
Go the MANU....
Manu ... was highly unprepared
written by Sole Hamo, September 03, 2008
Faamalo atu to the boys ... both the Manu Samoa and U19. Malo lava le taumafai.
I wish to focus my comments on the Manu's first ever century points loss. Niko Palamo has a lot to account for. So far, I have not seen enough evidence to suggest that we could move forward as a rugby country with Niko. The lack of games preparation was really exposed!! Sole, 7's rugby is a whole different game from 15!!! I believe that Niko is not the best man for the job.
keep fighting
written by p. key, September 03, 2008
we can all learn from what had happened yesterday, and it will make our tommorow much brighter. congratulation MANU, you put a wonderful fight against the number one rugby team in the whole world. toe taumafai atili, keep your heads up and stay positive as a team.
Go on you boys!
written by Staka, September 03, 2008
Against the most dominant team in the world. Our island-based players did a good job. Considering this was the first game against a real professional team for our island boys. I think we have promising talent in the island that needs to be nutured and exposed more to high level rugby. I agree our defense needs a lot of work. But, our boys showed a lot of good play when they were on attack. Resulting in two great tries, first time by any Manu Samoa team against the All Blacks.

Faamalo Manu le taaalo faatausala. Keep your heads up boys!
Malo Manu
written by Douglas, September 03, 2008
What a game? I was so impressed with the skills shown by the All Blacks and our Manu in just few seconds of the game. Our Manu did perform very poorly but don't blame the coach or the managment...its time for us the Samoans to show support for our team no matter what....South Africa did not cross the NZ line however, our Boys in blue got two in the bag....compare the AB's to the Manu it was more like a AB's versus Samoa U21....great performance from Semo Sititi and Uale Mai.....So proud of you all boys.....C'mon people let the Coach work on his new strategies and see whats going to happen....I will challenge the AB's for another test in 12 months to measure how well our team will perform...and also prove if the Coach is worth being in that position.

Malo to Coach and Manu team.....Good Luck for the Manu holidays and lets get ready for some entertaining game next year.....

Welcome to the ton club
written by Next Samoan Coach, September 03, 2008
Absolutely shocking defense. Even though we were missing some of our top players there should be no excuses for poor defense. I did not see no defensive pattern in the whole entire game. Most of the tries that the ABs scored werew through poor aimless tackling. Samoa are reknown for their tackling yet we were let down especially in the midfield and out wide.

I thought the Samoan forwards put up a good show for 60 minutes or so. They secured enough ball and did well in the breakdowns. Notise and Uale played well but our outside backs were shy and guessing what to do and to be fair it came down to a lack of experience.

There were some good moments but too few and far in between. Unfortunately we can now join Fiji and Tonga by being part of the ton club. Our worse ever defeat was around 70 points to the ABs.

You'd have to question some of the tactics by the coach and why was our defense so shocking. And last of all why didn't we kick the ball out in the dying seconds instead choosing to run and turning the ball over for the ABs to get past 100. Dumb play!
Never again

Faamalo i alo ma tamafanau a Samoa sa tausinio anapo...
I guess it all comes down to poor management to my opinion and SRU for not foreseeing this before it happens...This test match was set way before even the pacific nations cup was over and im so surprised nothing was ever done to prepare at least the local boys about the magnitude of the game and the step up game they are going to face. Only to hear from the eleventh hour that the coach himself already admit to expect hammering from the Blacks,.. Someone is not doing his job here...So are all to sit down and expect nothing ever happen...
Again faamalo to the boys le fai o le faiva...malo le taalo faatausala...

Was it really a test match?
written by Sifa, September 03, 2008
Ok, let’s not sugarcoat the embarrassment or cringe in denial at the woeful and deplorable performance of our team. I think the game may be in the record books as the most lopsided score in the history of professional rugby. I also doubt that the All Blacks intentionally ran up the score, which means that our team was totally at the mercy of their opponents due to some obvious inadequacies.

Rugby may be referred to as the “gentleman’s game” by its physical nature, however, as far as strategy and tactics go, it’s not as “scientifically” involved as American football. Therefore, despite some claims of an apparent evolution of rugby in the last decades, it has largely remained the same in its basics as in rucks, mauls, scrums, etc., The two most important fundamentals of the game are still speed and strength, like most sports. I have played the game myself and once one’s strength is depleted, there’s not much else that one can do. I have seen this as a consistent criticism of the Manu teams. They may be strong, and/or even stronger, physically, than their opponents and outmatch them during the early parts of the game, but endurance is something they often lack. Consequently, they are not able to remain competitive throughout the full game. E malolosi ae vave lava ona vaivai. Samoa should hire some sports nutritionists and other professional trainers to do a thorough evaluation and assessment of the problems. I’m sure our guys can be taught the basics of the game, and can implement them as well as any other team, but I’m also convinced that simple things like diet and other habits may be contributors to their endurance problems. Aerobic, resistance, sprint and plyometric training should also be made available. I also wonder if acclimation may play a part, and if so, why not schedule these games during the summer months in NZ?

Again, I doubt very much that Manu’s problems have to do with the know-how aspect of the game.
But if they do, then ...........................I am willing to donate my time to coach ....LOL! smilies/cheesy.gif Go Manu! smilies/grin.gif
50-50 Niko!
written by Faga'alu, September 03, 2008
Well there were 101 points against Manu Samoa but they also scored 2 tries! AND Manu Samoa also scored their highest score against the AB's but the AB's scored their highest against Manu Samoa. Well Niko really hasnt had that many matches with Manu Samoa and even though they got a hiding they still scored 2 tries, I think Niko can be the right man for the job but he really needs to work on the Manu's defence a lot more. And If those european clubs werent so scungy as well as the NZ clubs in the NZ cup thingy then I know It would have been a more closer game than that! Anywayz Niko....I believe you can change this Manu team into one of the best if not the best rugby team in the world! Dont give up! I'm in 100% support of you guys (Manu Samoa and Niko) Good Luck!
Get over it...and MOVE ON...

Malo Lava Manu, Malo lava le taumafai.

Let the game last night be a benchmark of what is now required.
Manu need more and more top games to continue to improve, and yes it also may mean us losing some of those top games. No one said it was going to be easy..as long as the team can continues to Improve.
Much luck to the Manu and the players and management for future games.
Im willing to stand behind the Manu as they find themselves...Are you?!!

Our boys can do much better if they have a coach...they played really well all the way to the end but the points just keeps coming ....the coach really didnt do a thing... there was no defence whats so ever.... lucky AB didnt score 200, attack was better at times but when it comes to defending , its like watching a laumoli in the evening i le malae.... man very bad... coaching staff especially the coach himself.. please try and have some plannning and prepare well mate.... your not just earning a living there... your carring hopes of the nation mate.... and dreams of our youths.. so do a good job...

what do you mean by our team did well/good etc? It was a battering, not becos of them but becos their preparation and preparations, set them out to fail. What is money if it means our people are set out to be smashed the way Samoa was shot last night? Who the hell proper preparation, to tell the whole world that Samoans in Samoa are dumb and stupid? Who the fala was behind this game? The Samoan Prime Minister who is the chairman of the Samoa Rugby Board?

it was never easy..........
written by Breaster E, September 03, 2008
Malo lava le taumafai,,,,,,,, even though the final score didn't look good at all but you did try and I think at some stages you did try too hard with your rushing defence which cost you alot of points. Rugby is a physical sport and fitness is a very important part of it, and the Manu fitness was always second to the ABs.
However, all in all it was an entertaining rugby, not the score board though. Time for preparations was alot less than that of the ABs. At the end of the day, it was never easy for the Manu to beat the ABs.

Nevertheless, A big faamalo to the Manu, and don't blaim the coach, at least it's too early to.

Taumafai atlili, it's a shame we don't have the resources as the big wealthy unions do.....so it will always be a big challenge for the SRU and our poor team.

sack him now!!!!!!!!!!!!
written by hitman, September 03, 2008
We are all proud samoans but come on people get real about this so every time the manu lose like this are we always going to come back an say well done boys good effort better luck next time when is that better luck going to come? 50 years from now yeah right. Simply put the coaching staff did a poor job in preparing the team for this game the defence was just shocking where was it back in the locker rooms locked up in thier bags or back in samoa. Niko should be sacked and relieved of his duties asap he has no idea on how to run an coach this team. why did they accept this test in the first place are we suppose to sit back and say it was a good experience for our local boys do they really think a young kid like alatasi tupou is going home thinking we got thrashed by a 100 but at least i played against the all balcks yeah right. The kid probabably thinks he doesnt have what it takes to make it at this level cause niko has shot his cofidence into the ground. Come on samoa get your act together its hard enough that the irb aint helping us but our own rugby union aint doin us any favours also stop putting your friends in these roles an get qualified people to coach and manage samoa sick of all these excuses an sympathetic votes. That loss was not acceptable an we shouldnt be accepting it.

Get rid of MARIST
written by Veta try again, September 04, 2008
Chairman, CEO Sua, the manager Tate, the other manager Ryan and the coach Niko should all be asked to resign. The All Black performance was SHAMEFUL. It was completely UNACCEPTABLE. The whole Marist connection needs to be dismantled. They place a blinkered view administrating and playing this great game. Su'a and Tate are old men who are totally bereft of dynamic ideas. Niko was a political appointment who has no idea of what is required. There are way too many Schusters in the system. Their influence on the game is rugby nepotism. Marist are a great club but they seem to want to monopolise rugby. Move over and get some fresh blood in. I don't care whether this was a A, B or C team. We go down as the country that lost 101-14. Brilliant.

ADMINS NOTE : I have balls mate, but they're not the issue here eh? Ordinarily this opinion of yours would have ended up in the trash...but I've made an exception to show you how my crown jewels hang
..factual errors you need to be clear on..Lemalu Tate Simi is no longer involved with Manu Samoa Management
..the other issue you've referred to like the Marist connection is as old as when I was wearing the blue jersey..
...be constructive next time or its the trash for you matey...

What is this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
written by Mate, September 04, 2008
All the practice and this is what we get. What is the matter with you guys!

Have you NO pride in what you do? Is the effort the best you have to show for all the hard work, the days at practice, the absence from family?

Give me a winner for pete's sake. Nobody likes a loser. We are a people of winners. Where the hell are the Best the country has to offer.

Give me the Best damn it! Find me the best players the country has to offer, if we have to go to Siberia to get back our flesh and blood, then damn it do it. Give me back our children, lost in this world to corporate interest that have nothing to fight for, but love of money. Restore the best in the sport. Country Pride is at stake.

Whether the Marist connections are old, the influence has never been more dominating than now. Top players sense when you are not capable of delivering/ inspiring. That's what happened. As a supporter who went downt to Yarrow stadium, we all noticed there seemed a resignation that we were preparing for a massive beating.
Last year, during a halftime 7's semifinal against England the Samoan team huddled together and chanted
"1-2-3 MARIST". They lost but what were they thinking?
Trust me, Tate was called the manager while the team was in N.Z. Su'a told the media he was and so did Ryan Schuster. Don't know why. Obviously uou wore the blue jersey and we all respect that.

people get used to these results cause the people running samoan rugby will never change a thing typical samoans who think they know it all. Niko came on the news here in NZ and said we got a good game plan and we a going to show the all blacks some new things what new things this is the same thing he said before the fijian came in this years pac cup and what happened there we got thrashed by fiji. I've been a proud supporter of the manu samoa for years and will always support the team but i will never support this useless pack of egos that run our proud team. 101 - 4 is and embarassement and anyone who thinks otherwise is just as stupid as those managing this team.
things will never change

Obviouisly this site has a love for marist but yeah like the dude above get rid of them they dont represent manu samoa and if thats the way they wanna do things then next time this team takes the field wear the marist colours and call themselves Marist dont disgrace our beloved Manu Samoa who represent all of samoa

To the Hon Prime Minister and officials of Samoa Rugby Union.
What do you think about the game?
Do you like the results and performance?
Me honestly, I think the boys are good, nothing wrong with them. they are actually realy good player from my view.
The prblem is the Coach.
What do you think PM? I think the coach had no idea what to teach the boys during training before the game. I mean if he is actually someone who knows something about rugby, he should have known that All Blacks is the # 1 team in the world. Playing against a team like that you have to be really good in defence. If you want to attack you have to like study 5 or 6 games they had before in order to have some sort of an idea. but to bad Mr Coach had no idea of what to do.
Mr. PM and officials of Samoa Rugby Union. If you all really want Manu Samoa to be ready for the next World Cup. Mr Niko the coach really is not the answer. We need a coach who actually sees the talent of the Samoan Players. We need a coach who can actually teach something like how to move forward, how to control their mental side, and how to make them think not to give up when the going gets tuff.
We need to spend money on good world class coaches like Deans, Graham Henry, etc. They are expense but the money is worth spending cause they do show results.
Mr. PM, I am happy to pay extra VAGST to fund for a very good coach for Manu Samoa. which I think is what need now before the next World Cup.
But still A Big Congatulations for the Boys in Blue, you all played so well, if only you had a good teacher to tell you what to do, like the All Blacks has.

Malo Tamasii Hamoa!! The country, I mean us, has the right to voice our disappointments with the performance of our rugby team. It was very very very very poor indeed. Nevertheless, I think its about time that we start to rethink how we, as a country support our Manu. While we are praying and stand behind them when they play, are the players serious enough in what they do and who they represent? Are the coaching staff only there for money and power? We have been told that in some cases, the players use drugs to the knowledge of the management (See the Sapolu Law and Iuni Sapolu letter to the editor on Samoa Observer 4th Sept) and nothing has been done about it. Using drugs while on training means the players are not serious enough these days. They only do it for the money, so as the management. The sport is now professional, and are the players so serious about winning for country? Or do they prefer to play for money? In such case, we, as supporters are serious and throw our patriotic support behind our rugby team, while the players and the management are only gold digging for themselves. The balance between gold digging and playing for country is not that healthy at all.
The point is, lets look at our rugby team no longer as a national pride where our prayers and support is an indication of our patriotism. Gone are the days for that pride with our heroes like Brian Lima, Too Vaega, Keneti Sio, Stan Toomalatai, Leavasa, and other local breed rugby greats, where country was more important than cash. Lets look at our rugby team nowadays as a business, a career, and a gold mine. When we do that, no more headaches for us supporters.

Have a nice day folks
Stop hating people.
written by PEACE, September 05, 2008
O.M.G!! CALM DOWN PEOPLE.......why is it that when Manu Samoa wins a match people always brag about how good the coach is and how the boys played very well... i just wanna say that i'm sick of all this crap about sacking the coach and whatever there is you people want to do with the team and the rugdy union....you see, it's really easy for us to talk but if you take time to sit down and think about how hard it is to play rugby, i bet you'll never think of taking up rugby as a sport.......this hating thing has got to stop and yea at least we scored "2 tries" HEEELLLOOO!14 is better than 0 so shut up and support our national team. We did good compared to Fiji and Tonga, they didnt score a try i think , but i heard that we did better so yea be proud of your team coz it aint easy being a rugby player. I'm a proud Samoan living in New Zealand and I love Samoa so much so please stop hating.

What a SHOCKER of a game!!!!!!!

Manu to play the AB's was always going to be a hard task BUT to go down like that 101-14....the most shameful game ever!!!!!

Let's face it The Management/Coach needs to 'Walk the Talk'. Pull their heads in and simply get professional, worthy people we can all look at and feel confident they'll do their jobs. 100% commitment is required.
Obviously Niko has performed poorly given the time he's had to prepare the team. Loss after Loss. Where was he weeks before the AB game???? Travelling, committing himself elsewhere.

Se Malo boys keep your heads up better luck next time.

Competition More?
written by Faga'alu, September 07, 2008
Well If ManuSamoa wants to have more experience for their players especially their home based players then why not suggest a competition between Samoa,Tonga,Fiji,USA,Canada,Japan,Portugal,Namibia,Mala ysia,Romania,Russia,Uruguay,Georgia,Hong Kong...shall I go on? Then we could have like a International Super 14 competition for all those lower ranked teams then everyone would get better, then we would have a decent amount of experience to take on teams like the AB's and SAF and Australia. Thats a good idea and make sure to have that competition when all the countries agree to it and when our players can actually come and play. Who thinks its a good idea? And to all those people who are throwing hate at how ManuSamoa played and their coach, Most of you probably couldnt even play as good as the ManuSamoa players! Why dont you guys go and play the AB's? see how it feels to lose! I think the score would be ManuSamoa and Niko Haters 0 - 500 AB's! Leave Manu Samoa and Niko alone!
Embarassing!!
written by vailele boy, September 07, 2008
This game should never have taken place as far as i'm concerned. The Fijians turned them down, and so did the Tongans, probably knowing full well the massive thrashing they would have gotten. But not Samoa, the powers that be decided to take up the AB's on their offer and the end result was a 101 - 14 demolition of my beloved Manu Samoa.
This team was very ill prepared even though they had about 4 months to prepare for this game.
I read somewhere that Mr Palamo was at the Olympic Games when he should have been in Samoa preparing the team as best he could.
Not only did we lose by 87 points - we lost by a 3 figure number!
And the worst part of it all is that its now etched into the history books.
All comes down to this.....
written by Money_Talks, September 09, 2008
It all comes down to this, money talks. So I guess all the samoan union could afford was Niko Palamo (contrary to this i thought Pat Lam etc), its a shame that our proud rugby nation does not have the enormity of funds and cash available as the big unions do i.e AB's etc. But I guess it all comes down to the money...with the money we could get a Robby Deans or a Graham Henry, better facilities, technical improvements and development etc thats a no brainer of course.

Second of all, as we all know, rugby is professional. That means, rugby people is a business, sure there is country loyalty and patriotism, but for the players, its not enough to bring food to the table, which is why money is everything in the game. That's reality guys. I dont know about you guys, i've got nothing against the PM personally, but we need to replace him with someone who has expertise and knowledge of the market available for rugby to attract sponsors, corporate deals etc. In turn it would leave the players & management to do their part whilst the administration do theirs. (Yes i am aware the PM has a Masters degree in Commerce)

This then, as my final point, would then implement a better run administration behind the game. I guess part of the problem is the administration itself. However, having a good administration is only half the job, it goes hand in hand with a good solid all round performance with good results on the field.

On that note,

Respect and Go Manu!
Manu Samoa for life.
written by Faasiu, September 22, 2008
It was good to see Samoa get a test against the AB's. Yeah, the score wasn't nice, but i take my hat off to the Manu Samoa team for there effort & commitment to taking the field & trying there best.
What i find disgraceful is how the coach decided to go to the Olympic games while the team was in training for the All Black test! And the team was apparently picked a week or two before the game! How are the Samoan team supposed to compete on the international level with a coach that has shown little commitment to our team?
Yes i agree with the majority.....hire someone that knows the present game of rugby & been coaching a 1st grade team or similar in Europe or NZ & someone who will cherish the appointment as coach & be loyal to the team. I think Mike Umaga would be the best selection as he was a committed ex-Manu Samoa player & has been coaching the past few years in Europe & Apollo Perelini as forward coach. When i saw these two playing for Manu Samoa, they gave it 110% & defensively, they were the man! If defense is what Samoa was lacking, Mike will fix it & Apollo Perelini as forward coach! If these two get in the coaching seat, the Manu Samoa will go forward & Manu Samoa will be strong. No matter what happens, i will always support Manu Samoa & any other Samoan team, whether they win, lose or draw! Samoa's no.1 fan, always!!
