Chief Executive Officer Su’a Peter Schuster

The Samoa Rugby Football Union (SRU) is poised to undertake a new venture that if successful will go a long way towards a lasting solution to the problem of players overseas drain and restrictive contract obligations.
The scheme revolves around the selection of a team of promising local players to be trained full time at the SRU High Performance Unit.
“These players will be contracted to the SRU on a semi-professional basis where they will play and train together at the HPU,” Chief Executive Officer Su’a Peter Schuster revealed last Friday.
“We’re in the process now of finalizing the sponsorship for players contracts which will be duly made public once it is ready to go.”
CEO Su’a was unable to reveal the identity of the sponsor until the deal is signed but he did reveal that it is a local company.
The restrictions of playing contracts on overseas players is always a sore thorn for any Manu Samoa coaching staff.
Coach Tuala Niko Palamo and his coaching staff are already having their first bitter taste of not having access to Samoa’s best players for the upcoming test match against the All Blacks.
The lack of experienced players make the chances of an upset win a most daunting challenge for Coach Tuala, who will have to plug up some very big holes in the team with the local material available.
“The team we’ll be putting together is the best that we can field from here, and we’ll be throwing everything in to win,” Coach Tuala persisted.
“I know you all think the All Blacks will run all over us, but we’ll see.”
Coach Tuala believes however there will be a lot of positives the new players will get from playing at the level of the All Blacks.
He looked at the local players experience as the start of the development that the SRU is working to put together for a semi-professional squad of rugby players who will form the core of players for the national side.
If successful the bulk of the Manu Samoa will be selected locally, cutting down the reliance on overseas based players who will be brought selectively to stand in as replacement.
The Manu Samoa is scheduled to play the All Blacks in a couple of weeks time in New Zealand.

Looks good, sounds good, but be realistic

We all know the HPU will contribute to the improved performance of the boys. However that is not enough. Those boys need to constantly compete at a much tougher competition as the NZ NPC and Super 14 to be able to compete with the AB and Wallaby. Be real.
Are you sure?

I think this is a good step for the Manusamoa to improve the experience but the issue here is who is local and who is not? is a local playing in Samoa..born in Samoa? born in NZ? born somewhere else? most of the pacific nations cup team is based overseas because of Monetary awards which will dwarf whatever Samoa try and bring to the table...most of the players I know who play for the Manu want to play overseas cause thats where the oportunities are...and of cause the money..How else are you gonna survive? And if Samoa try and stop the overseas players coming to play for the Manu then its gonna be a very sad day for the Manu...bye bye tuilagis, the captain, eliota, stowers...common sense should prevail the Best team should be chosen from all Samoan players in the world not just living in Samoa playing local rugby...and GO the Manu v All Blacks

When these things happen, I feel very gutted and nauseous at the continuing signs of Western imperialism in sports through the IRB and rugby unions like New Zealand and Australia. Its ok for our local players to have the chance to compete at a higher level of rugby. My disappointment goes to the rules of the IRB, supported all the way by NZ and Aussies unions concerning players registrations and those stuff. It is a fact that small unions like Samoa Tonga and Fiji continue to suffer from the white men's rules of rugby. We cannot do anything about it at all anyway. But the reality and my concern is the way that rich nations make regulations and policies where poor nations players suffer, and their human rights are controlled. I mean, a small rugby nation like Samoa is struggling to compete on a higher level because of inequality and exploitation in between the lines of IRB rules concerning players. The players are treated like comodities by their clubs more than human beings with freedom and human rights. Look at the case of Sonny Bill Williams and the Bulldogs, as well as the case of Ronaldo and Man United in football. IRB rules on players are exactly what Blatter said in football, "its modern slavery."

Have a thoughtful day folks

Our rugby team is not going anywhere to be honest..there are lots of problems that needs to be address and I do believe theres lots of politics situation that happen behind the scene that really put pressure on the SRU and its decision of going forward. the idea of trainning local players are a good one but there are some real issues that will arise later on..I think SRU should run its own planning and future development without the influences and distraction from the samoan government.. thats is one issue the other is ..manu needs more games to keep their players fitness and knowledge of the game in a high level e.g aussie, springboks and allblacks..we should have a competition with agentina, usa, canada, but i guess there is lack of financial support so ...yeah..dont know..what is the answer is ..

All a smoke screen....wasn't this Samoa's greatest wish to play the mighty All Blacks?! (Not exactly refering to the above article but relating to the loved Manu Samoa.]Now they've got it & what do they do....come up with all sort of excuses. Did anyone notice the Manu Samoa coach in Beijing...under another title SASNOC secretary or other?! Jesus Mary & Joseph aren't there enough qualified people to do either job instead one person trying to do both?

wasnt this the coach that said local players from now on......we have a whole bunch of players back home and lets give them a chance....even if we had the world cup squad from last year wed still struggle against the mighty all blacks......lets give those village boys a chance from tua who never been outside of the country and let them cherish the experience for the future of samoan rugby.......is uale mai not available at all.....he in my opinion sets the pace and heart of the team when he took over number nine from polu .se loto toa ma aua le palaai!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some months ago the CEO, coach & whole shebang admin trotted off 2 NZ, Aust, etc & formalised O/S reps to assist with identifying players 4 the MS, underwent trials, selected players 2 final trials in Samoa. Now they're saying e focus on local players. What tha..? yep another typical FIG JAM case. Good 2 know nothing much has changed....the egos still outclass the professionlism. Talofa i nai tama taaalo ia o tou mama na.
