We need a specialist first five...
written by Robbie Deans, June 21, 2008
Sapolu's kicks were mostly aimless. Polu had an average game; Mai should start next week. I think we need to bring in Sasulu or Warren for the first five position, so that they can bomb the air midfield and get the speedsters like David Lemi to chase it down and put pressure on the opposition instead of giving them space. Gavin Williams ,Tuilagi, and Henry Fa'afili were the only real standouts for me. The next game is the most important of the tournament because it is against the Ikale Tahi who beat us at the world cup. It also decides who gets the wooden spoon as mentioned above.
Coach also needs to put Uale Mai from the start of the game. When he came on against the Maoris gaps started to open and there was some sort of co-ordination in their running.

Malo le taaalo boys! We need to remember this is a new team with a new system. From the beginning Tuala has said it will take time for those wins to start piling on. It's a very young, inexperienced team. Let's give them a chance and benefit of the doubt that they will get their swagger back and start kicking some butt.

Good luck Manu. Continue to work hard and never lose faith in Tuala's system.

To all Manu fans, be patient...Rome wasn't built in a day! God Bless Manu Samoa!

P.S. Malo Newsline you guys are doing a terrific job. Keep up the hard work!

Haven't seen the game but the scoreliine certainly reflects some sort of consistency in improvement? Prehaps we have the right personel there now. Maybe all they need is some game time together to develop combinations? I remember back in 1998, at the retirement of some of their more prominent players, the
All Blacks went winless for 5 consecutive games. A star studded team who couldn't string together even one win in the tri-nations series? It was unheard of. A bleak blemish in a very proud nations rugby heritage. So, I kinda find it funny that people are attacking our Manu team like a dog to a bone. Every team goes through a rebuilding phase, regardless of how proud their rugby histroy is. And with the limited player resources that we have, I guess the process takes longer. I believe our Manu team is in good hands. In the hands of people that care about our national team, and the success it advocates for a nation. And if you think you can do a better job, then put in an application for the coaches job, or play harder at club level so that prehaps you might get the opportunity to be selected for the Manu and rectify the position with which you believe that our team is failing in. I pray that the Manu adminstrators have the insight to pick the right players for the right postions. All the best to our Manu team for the remaining games. Always a fan regardless of the results. Another improved performance would be good, a win would be great lol.
Next samoan Coach
written by Ron, June 21, 2008
I think the forwards played well, especially in the tight stuff and there were some good moments with rolling mauls. They may have held on to it sometimes a bit too long and should have got it out wider sooner.

It was sad to see that the backline was still a bit cramped and there was no fluency with the half back / first five combination. In saying that Polu has just joined the squad so should get another go. Good to see Williams add a bit of stability to the backline and if it weren't for his penalty goals we would have been 0. We have the backline but maybe the backline coach needs to work on some different moves. Any rugby fan would have seen that almost everytime it was spread out wide it was one on running instead of clear backline moves. And also the backline looked a bit flat making it easy for the Maori backline to come up on shade defence. Plenty of speed out wide which they need to use.

As for a quick fix answer to finding a classy five eight, i don't think it's going to be happening over night. Bringing back Roger Warren in to the mix is going backwards. He's been tried and has shown that he is not up to international level. I'd still have Sapolu their untill we find someone better.

I have been watching semifinal rugby in France and good to see Henry Tuilagi in fine form. There are still afew Samoan players involved and will not get to see them in the PNC. I hope the SRU do everything they can to get their best players released for the September clash against the ABs.

Good luck Manu for their next game. Play with your hear but also use your head (mentaklity).

I was at the game and from where I was sitting (2nd tier, main stand - thanks to free tickets hehe) I thought the forwards were bloody useless.

The reason why our backline couldn't do much with the ball was because our forwards had no intensity on attack. They were too slow to recycle possession. Everytime they formed to attack around the ruck, the Maori defence was all ready for them. In fact the Maori could've fallen asleep on their defensive line because our forwards took so long to get the ball out. Even if the Maori loosies were slowing the ball down, that is the fault of our useless loose forwards who were getting beaten to the breakdown all day.

The only good thing about the game was the defence. The Manu had to spend most of the game tackling because the forwards were so useless in winning any possession. Last night, they tackled well and held out the Maori - who really should've made more of their opportunities. Our defence was really good and I credit the team for that. Well done boys!

As for Fuimaono-Sapolu, well first-five isn't his preferred position. He has been playing 2nd-5/8 (inside centre) most of his life, yet the coach wants to put him at first-five because (apparently) he thinks all the other first-fives are just not good enough at getting the ball over the advantage line. Against Fiji, Roger Warren tried to launch attacks from behind the advantage line or kicked the ball away aimlessly.

Uale Mai played well when he came on. When he and the rest of the reserves went on, I yelled out "BRING ON LOLO LUI" hehehe. Lolo Lui should be given his chance. Given how useless our forwards are at winning any ball or setting a platform, we can use Lolo Lui to drop-kick whatever ball we do get from anywhere on the field - easy points!

Overall team has improved since last 2 games...however there's still a lot of work for the backs. No combination- under utilised esp. 1st half. Agree with some of the critiques i le 1st five; lead - talk & more control of ball utilise his backs; some unnecessry kickings...need more phases both backs & fwds.
Missing out a lot on the traditional hard tackles? Tetele ma lelei tino o le au ae ua le faaaogaina aisea? Fea Brian Lima ae le alu ane e a'o tackles? Good clean tackles that we're known 4. Some players appear 2 b depending on nxt player 2 tackle...this was 1 of the contributers 2 ur lss.

O le la lava e lelei le au, e le mua uma ni vaa se lua. This is a big improvement from the Fiji game. O le mea sili o lae malolo i nai ai laiti, ma o le la ua iloa le improve mai le last game. It could have been much worse and the score could have been way bad
Bringing in one player doesnt mean he can defeat the whole 15 opponents. The coach and the management knows much much better than all of yous posting comments in here. If you think you know more, save space and time, go to the manusamoa website and send the coach a good suggestion on what to improve on. short and sweet but most important contributing to the team effort

Accept the defeat graciously and look at the bright side of things. We got to beat Tonga and Japan big margins to avoid last place. Otherwise, be good sportmanship..winning is not everything...losing is having more lessons to learn and gain from for future games.

all the best Manu...

written by we are not to defend...we to attack also, June 22, 2008
we good in defend now but thats the half part of the game, what i suggest is put Uale Mai in a playmaker position as he is one of the most respected attacker in modern rugby, Y shouldnt we put him in number 10 so he can open up Faafili, Lemi and Tuilagi???? coaches,,, we need a very sharp attacking format, quick flow of the ball in hands while at the same time straight running and accurate angles from the backline,,,,,anyway, we are proving to shine again on the scoreboard,,,malo coaches and players le faamalolosi.....every complaint leads up to a compliment ,,,,

Some good some bad things from the last game. As JM said, we were so slow and the fowards seems confused what they should do next from each rucks and mauls. Polu was ok but it seems his qualities could'nt suit the way the team played. Everytime he ran with the ball from a ruck or maul no runners run up to spaces he tried to create. Everyone just waited 10 or 5 meters far behind to receive the ball. I've seen Tonga and sometime Fiji play the same way. Their backs stay too deep 10 or 15 meters behind rucks and mauls and the 1st receiver dont run up they just waited behind for the pass and its very had to cross the advantage line because the defence came with the pass. The moment the 1st receiver get the ball, the defenders get up to him and that is 10 meters gain for the defence team without the ball. We should try and recylce the ball faster and get our runners to stop wating far behind for the pass to get to them. Teach them to run up and receive the ball at full speed. I also agree sapolu has enouch game time at first five and he showed his not good at that position.

Hope our team learn some more lessons this time. I hope next time we play like taulelea not like matais because thats how some of our boys seems to behave on the field. No urgency kele le faamaliuliu.

Give it all you have guys and please listen to the referee because he is the one controlling the game not any player.

Manuia tele le au for the next game. We still support you!!
Moving in the right direction

Despite our loss to the NZ natives, our players played well in the first three quarters. The world cup is still a few years away and I believe the coaching staff is moving to the right direction. Let's continue to support our Boys in blue and the Coaching personnel. Go Manu!!!!!

Tonga game wil be an indication..
written by Robbie Deans, June 22, 2008
I am confident that we will win the game against Tonga. This is only because so far, our team has been improving. First off lost badly to Fiji. Secondly we nearly beat Australia. Thirdly we didn't do so bad against the Maoris. So, on paper, we should have the edge over Tonga. If we don't win then there is definitely something to be worried about.

Uale Mai should start this week against Tonga. He can put players through the gap like no other. As for number 10, well i think Sasulu should be given a start there. The wings midfield and Williams at FB looks like a strong unit so I'm guessing no changes there.

i was also at the manu game down in hamilton... and i must dissagree with the comment on the performance of our forwards!!! from where i was sitting, 1st tier of the main stand, the forwards were FANTASTIC! yes the referee was totally inconsistent, and we didnt deserve that first sin bin.

Big ups to Census Johnson... and great performance from our 1st five Sapolu. Everyone did a great job... keep it up boys!! we got tonga next!

According to my sources Henry Tuilagi has finished his duties for his club for this season when they bowed out of the semi final last week. This should give Henry the green light to play against Tonga! If Henry comes, we are going to have a world class number 8 and some good backrowers to compliment his presence. Seriously this guy is the forward equivalent to Brian Lima. Lets all hope that he's able to play.
Next Samoan Coach
written by R. T, June 26, 2008
Yes Henry Tuilagi's team lost last weekend in the French top 14 semifinal. He had a monster game and is in good form. Unfortunately the selectors have chosen not to go with as he was named in this weekends squad but is not in the team. In all fairness, it is a big ask for a player to play a long hard season then come down under and go straight in to a test match.

To be honest, i think the selectors have done a mickey mouse job with selections this year. There are some good and established players who we have yet to see and yet they have introduced some players who were not up to standard. In future maybe select some of these players in a Samoa A team to prep them up and see if they are ready for the next level, not throw them in the test team just because they had a couple of good games playing club rugby. Remember it is a big step up from club to international level.

Interesting to see n Lolo Lui in the lineup for this weeks clash with Tonga. You would have thought he's deserved his chance by now.

A must win game for the men in blue this weekend as anything less than a win will not be accepted by the Samoan fans. The team has been together for over a month now, so there shouldn't be any excuse about getting combinations right or gelling together as a team. We have the players but i wonder sometimes if they have the right game plan. It seems like the team has gone backwards. No excuses about rebuilding as we have been rebuilding since the 1991 world cup. It's time to step up!!

Go the Manu!
