10-a-side rugby action at Apia Park

Marist St Joseph’s were winners of yesterday’s Smokefree Rugby 10-aside competition held at Apia Park.
Marist overcame a determined Moata’a side in a tight final in front of a crowd of 200 people at the Apia Park Stadium.
Moata’a took the lead in the opening minutes of the first half, when one of their tight forwards crashed over the tryline.
The try was converted by their first five and gave Moata’a a seven point breather earlier on.
Moata’a took control of the game for most of the first half with their accurate kicking game, which placed Marist defenders under immense pressure.
But Marist soon found their rhythm when their mobile forwards started to secure clean ball for their back to work with.
Half way through the first half, Marist backline spun the ball wide to speedy winger Pulemalie Sopo who smartly darted his way through the Moata’a desperate defenders to score in the corner.
The try was not converted from out wide but by then Marist was starting to take control of the game.
Just minutes before half time, a quick tapped penalty by Marist saw the ball again going out wide to Sopo’s way.
The Manu Samoa sevens winger again beat the defenders to the try line for his second try on the dot of half time.
Again the try was unconverted but Marist went into the break with a three point buffer and a team full confidence.
The green machine came out firing in the second half but Moata’a was up to the challenge. However, lack of discipline on defense often let them down at some crucial moments of the game.
It gave Marist more momentum as the game reached its final moments.
Marist started to play possession and territory which led to an opportunity for first five Afa Lesa to nail a drop goal just outside Moata’a’ 22 meter line.
The final nail on Moata’a’s coffin was delivered by replacement prop, Tele Ese who powered his way through the Moata’a tired defenders to seal the match for Marist.
The try was again not converted but the game was already in the bag for the green machine.
Moata’a reached the Cup final after edging out Vaimoso while Marist made it through after defeating old rivals SCOPA.
The Smokefree 10-aside-competition is now in its final week this weekend. SCOPA won the first leg four weeks ago before the Academy 10s took the second leg.
Vaiala took the third in Savaii. This weekend it’s anyone’s title.
