Niusila Opeloge Tested Positive For Banned Drugs PDF Print E-mail

The Golden Boy of weightlifting, Niusila Opeloge, has shocked Samoa by reports of being tested positive for the use of a banned substance, in last year’s World Weightlifting Championship at the Faleata Sports Complex.
The world governing organization, the International Weightlifting Federation, IWF, has imposed an automatic 2-year ban on the Samoan lifter from taking part again in international competition
Opeloge has reportedly denied taking any illegal drugs knowingly.
The President of SASNOC, the ruling body of sports in Samoa, Vaeolenofoafia Tapasu Leung Wai, is suspicious about the involvement of the Samoan lifter with illegal performance enhancing drugs.
He speculated on SBC TV that the banned substance could have been in another lifters bottled water that Opeloge may have unknowingly drank.
The SASNOC President was also skeptical about how a local athlete could afford such expensive drugs.
Opeloge can contest the results of the IWF findings by taking a second test.

Say it ain't so

Wow have we well and truly come this far in sports? Given Samoa's isolation I will give Niusila the benefit of the doubt. First thing that came to my mind was Coffa who was accussed of doping lifters, but not by a credible source though. These things always comes down to he said she said. All IWF knows is that the test was positive and that's what ruling's are based on. This is another blow to lifting indeed. The inhouse fighting and fingerpointing, the departure of the Oceania training institute and now one of the athlete's tests positive for a banned substance. Such chaos for a sport that brought so much success.

Im hell shock at this report. If the report was true that Opeloge must have drank another lifter's bottle which contain the banned subtance, it really shows the lack of concern and professionalism amongst our coaches and athletes alike. Given the fact they were well aware of the tests that will be carried out during the tournament, there should have been much more emphasis and awareness on what goes in and out of any athletes mouths or may I say all inlets and outlets given that theres no specific detail on how this has happened.
The athletes should have also been taught the benefit of keeping their own things to themselves and not sharing just for their own benefit.
I am sure this is not the first case, It is time Samoan sports and everyone alike should be more professional in their approach to their careers no matter what. Sports, work, school and so forth, its really reflecting the relaxing attitude and lack of concern on matters of national interest. Money is wasted and so as time and resources which should have been taken advantaged of for a more worthier course.
Niusila's positive test

This is the saddest news I've heard in a long time,Niesila has obviously worked very hard and was looking forward to qualify for the Beijing Olympics. I don't believe that a lifter with such expirience would do a this on purpose especially when he was so close to the olympic dream.I mean all athletes dream of going to the olympics and represant their country and will not jeopetise that. smilies/cry.gif
