STILL FRIENDS: Coaches Tuala and Kirwan at the end of Saturday's nail-biter

DISAPPOINTMENT: The disappointed look on the Japanese players after coming so close.

WAS A BATTLE: Tuilagi Brothers, Henry and Alesana with Sasulu after a hard earned win.

he Manu signed off on a winning note against Japan yesterday, in a hearting stomping game that should credit the fighting spirit of the visitors pressing for the try line right up to the final whistle.
Japan trailed 31-37 when the referee called for time full time, to leave the Manu Samoa fisting the air with a hard fought win.
“ Japan never laid down,” Manu  Samoa Coach Tuala Niko Palamo conceded after the game.
“We knew they would not hold back and that is what happened.”
The score was locked at 17 a piece at the half before the final 40 minutes produce a sea saw of tries that ended with Samoa hanging on at the end with a 37- 31 win.
“The tournament has been a very difficult one for us,” says Coach Tuala, “ but the boys hung in there to cap it off with today’s win.”
The Manu Samoa overcame three straight losses against Fiji, Australia A and the New Zealand Maori All Blacks at the start of the Pacific Nations Cup, to string together back to back wins against Tonga and Japan to wrap it up.
With Fiji losing to Tonga in Nukualofa on their final game, it opens 3rd placing for the Manu Samoa to sneak in.
For Coach Tuala and the Manu Samoa, the big test against the All Blacks in September looms.
“The end of the PNC is a beginning for us, with the test match against the All Blacks.
“Our overseas boys are leaving to continue with their playing contracts leaving our local boys behind with their preparations.”
It is unclear when the full team gets together again to prepare for the All Blacks.
“Any coach would want at least six weeks of preparations to be competitive against a team of the caliber of the All Blacks.”
Whether Coach Tuala gets his wish remains to be seen.
