The Rugby Union Boss has defended the ‘green light’ hiccup at the start of the week that delayed the announcement of the Manu Samoa team to play Fiji in the opening round of the Pacific Nations Cup.
The SRU Chairman, Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, confirmed the new approval format for any team selection, where a High Performance Review Committee will have to be satisfied first that players are physically fit.
“This new change is now part of the selection process for any team picked for international tournament,” the Chairman says.
“This is where our Manu Samoa World Cup campaign last year fell through. Players in the team were found afterward that they were not performing up to standard because they were carrying injuries.
“The fitness levels for others were not up to standard and it showed on the field. We cannot afford to have that sort of thing jeopardize our attempts to be competitive on the international scene.”
Behind the new stringent measures the SRU has now put in place is the lurking concern about the impact of poor performance on the much needed sponsorship support.
“Nobody wants to be involved with a team that is always losing, so we have to make sure that any team we field in any international competition is our best.”
Last week’s return of the Manu Samoa 7’s to winning form at the London leg of the international Rugby Board circuit, has brought some form of relief to the rugby body.
“We need wins like that to keep our sponsors happy and to attract new ones. Sponsors love winners.”
The SRU Board met yesterday to clear the Manu Samoa selection hiccup, and to click our any toenails angered out of joint.
Manu Samoa coach Tuala Niko Palamo are currently camping with the team squad at the Faofao Resort at Aleipata, but told Newsline earlier in the week that the team for the Fiji international has already been selected.
The Chief Executive Officer, Su’a Peter Schuster, was prevented however from making the team list public because the High Performance Review Committee requirement was not fulfilled.
Yesterday’s SRU Board meeting was supposed to clear the way for the team announcement.
The Manu Samoa is expected to fly out to Fiji on Monday.

The Prime Minister again has shown that he alone can be the only one to make the decision or give the GREEN LIGHT for anything to be put into motion. He the leader of the country, the god of Samoa, the chief of Rugby, Netball, Horse Racing, Boxing, and the ROAD must put his stamp on everything that has to do with the Samoan way of life. All of you who voted for him shall praise him and appreciate the air that you breath, the breadfruit you eat, the rain that you drink and the hut over your head. He really is the god almighty of the Samoan fools who continually bow to his every decree. Better enjoy the sight of him before he implodes!
Soooo Predictable.
