Australian Referee Coaches Matt Peters and Kerry Pierce

There is currently a great need for the local rugby scene to not only develop local refereeing talents but to boost the number of locals interested in gaining such talents.
Matt Peters and Kerry Pierce are referee coaches from Australia, here to assist and help develop the skills of referees in Samoa.
The philosophy they bring with them is to enhance the strength of local referees as they are positive that Samoan referees are capable of refereeing at an international level if given the right training.
In the Wellington Sevens, it was unfortunate to see referees from neighboring islands such as Fiji take up the challenge and none from Samoa.
Chief Executive Officer of the Samoa Rugby Union Sua Peter Schuster says that is about to change.
“The Union had tried to develop other referees in the past, and two locals had been lined up to start refereeing at an international level but due to other commitments they were forced to pull out,” says Sua.
He says that the SRU is re advertising the Referee Manager Position and Samoa should expect to see locals refereeing on an international level.
Peters and Pierce also recognized that the Samoan referees are extremely good communicators and natural athletes but basically lack fitness.
Another problem they picked up was the reaction of local referees to tense games and situations under pressure.
“They tend to rush their decisions, where as they should remain calm so that the players will remain calm too,” says Peters.
Peters and Pierce were both happy with the local referees’ performances in the Savaii 10 A-Side saying they were very consistent.
“It was very exciting rugby, and I believe Samoa will be ready to make the next step soon, that is Samoan refs for the IRB.”
