Samoa Looks Set To Win IRB Hosting Rights PDF Print E-mail

The official word from the ruling body of world rugby is yet to be made known, but Samoa looks set to win hosting rights for the Oceania Rugby Sevens World Cup qualifying tournament in Apia this year.
The Samoa Rugby Union Chief Executive Officer, Su’a Peter Schuster, is unable to make any confirmation ahead of an official announcement that is expected to be made, if not this weekend, then early next week.
“We still have a few things to be worked out but the Chairman is probably going to hold a press conference to make the announcement,” Su’a told Newsline last night.
The Oceania Qualifying Tournament will decide two men’s and women’s teams to represent the region in the Rugby 7’s World Cup in Dubai next year.
Samoa missed out of qualifying at the last Rugby 7’s World Cup, where New Zealand, Australia and Fiji were able to secure places for Dubai.
“New Zealand, Australia and Fiii are already in so they don’t need to play in the qualifier, except for their women’s teams if they want to take part in the World Cup,” Su’a added.
If Samoa wins the hosting rights, it will be the first international tournament at this level to be hosted under sanction from the world body of rugby.
“All the rugby playing countries from as far out as Papua New Guinea, Tahiti and New Caledonia are eligible to compete for any of the spots in both the men’s and women’s competition.”
Based on current form, Samoa and Tonga will have to be the front runners from the Oceania region to qualify for Dubai.
