The Samoa Rugby Union is looking into hosting a leg of the World Seven’s Circuit in Samoa when and if they can win approval from the International Rugby Board.
Chief Executive Officer of the Samoa Rugby Union, Su’a Peter Schuster, believes that since Samoa hosted one of the best ever South Pacific Games, we should be capable of hosting a leg of the popular tournament.
However, there are many different areas that need to be fully scrutinised first in order to decide whether to put this thought to the International Rugby Board (IRB) or not.
First of all the Rugby Union needs to show to the IRB that they will have sponsorship support for the tournament.
Unfortunately this can be difficult because sponsors want to see that they are sponsoring a tournament, says Su’a.
He adds, he can not get a tournament here with out having sponsors and he cannot get sponsors without having a tournament.
Nevertheless, he does say that it is possible to hold a tournament in Samoa; it is just a matter of good planning and organisation.
“We also need to look at how to met costs.”
During the tournament, hosts pay for the athletes and officials accommodation and transport.
However, Su’a says, given what happened during the South Pacific Games, Samoa may not have enough accommodation but this is something that needs to be looked into.
Su’a would very much like the tournament to be played in Samoa and says it is a “great thing for the nation to have.”
He believes it will provide much needed exposure for Samoa and Samoan rugby.
It would also bring in a large number of tourists who will be coming to watch the rugby and spend their money here, says Su’a
