New Plymouth Mayor Paul Tennet during the Ava Ceremony

The Mayor of New Plymouth, in New Zealand, Mr. Peter Tennet paid tribute this week to  the contribution by players of Samoan descent in rugby to New Zealand.

Tennet who is Apia to develop connections between New Plymouth, and the local government praised the high skill levels shown by Samoan boys.

“The Taranaki rugby team, tends to be the Samoan boys that score all the winning tries for our team,” says Tennet.

New Plymouth is the port and main city in the Taranaki region on the West Coast of the North Island of New Zealand.

Tennet’s daughter Gemma is the girlfriend of All Black and Hurricanes player, Samoan born Chris Masoe and so Tennet and his family feel that they have a special connection with the Samoan community.

“With our family’s connection, I am very keen to see rugby develop between our two communities as well.”

Tennet traveled to Samoa with Julie Straka the International Relations Manager and Barbara McKerrow the Chief Executive Officer of the New Plymouth Council.

Tennet beleives that connection building between local governments of the Pacific is an initiative of the Commonwealth Local Government Forum, based in Fiji, that works to promote and strengthen effective democratic local governments through the Commonwealth to facilitate the exchange of good practice in local government structures and services.

He hopes that through the exchange, they will able to learn from Samoa’s local government and vice versa.

“We are looking at where our local government can learn from the local government in Apia Samoa. And where local government can learn from what we are doing.” There will be exchanges of ideas and people between communities and I am hoping that both communities will grow because of that.”

Welcomed with an ava ceremony held at the Fale o Pulenuu Eleelefou, the Head of Internal Affairs, Fata Maulolo Tavita, believes that there are many ways the New Plymouth Local Government can help Samoa.

Not only through funding provided for much needed office facilities but also to build a relationship with a local government from a much larger country.

Maulolo, adds that Samoas local government is equally thrilled to develop this relationship.
