Waisale Serevi

Amasio Valence also on the cards

The world’s greatest sevens player is coming to Samoa.
Fiji’s Waisale Serevi has been confirmed to take part in this years’ 21st Marist Samoa International Sevens tournament next weekend.
He will be leading the Fijian Drifters team which include another big name in the sevens game, former New Zealand sevens star Amasio Valence.
Other teams confirmed from overseas for the tournament are the IMEX Brisbane Samoa, Canterbury Samoa, New Zealand Marist Federation and the Fiji Drifters.
Marist Sports Club President, Tagaloa Faafouina Su’a said it was very pleasing to have two of the sevens games biggest names for the Marist tournament.
“It’s not only good for the tournament itself but also for the level of competition,” Tagaloa said. “I’m sure local players will be fired up when they learn that players of such caliber will be taking part in the tournament.”
Tagaloa and his organizing committee had been working hard since Christmas to try and get Serevi and his team to Samoa.
Last year Severi, the then national sevens coach for Fiji, confirmed to Marist Samoa that he was bringing his troops over.
Due to some unknown circumstances he had to call back and canceled their trip, the week leading up to Marist Sevens.
But Tagaloa said this year, it’s certain Serevi was heading to Samoa for the Marist sevens.
“As I said, having Serevi and his boys over will certainly boosted and level of intensity in terms of competition,” Tagaloa said.
“On top of that, our people, whom this tournament if really for, will get the chance to actually see these top players live in action. So we’re very please to announce that Severi and the Fijian Drifters are coming for this year’s tournament.”
The 21st Marist Samoa International Sevens tournament is scheduled to kick off on the 22nd and 23rd of this month.
According to Tagaloa, the venue is yet to be finalized.
“Initially we planned to host it at Marist Stadium Lotopa,” he said. “But now we are negotiating with the Apia Park Board for a deal but we will notify the public when everything is settled.”
Moata’a Rugby Club are the champions from last year after defeating Vailele in the Cup final at Lotopa.
