Government has slammed the door on school sports for the remainder of the year after student riots last week left several injured and properties in Apia damaged.
The Cabinet decision on Wednesday has cut the schools rugby season for boys and netball for girls short.
Schools will have to do without an athletic season.
Apia Park, the country’s main sporting ground and venue for the popular intersecondary school athletics is put out of bound to them as well.
An independent inquiry into the cause of the riot, including the involvement of teachers, will be carried out.

time for some creativitiy
written by ace, May 03, 2008
No one said that it's impossible to create mix teams for school sports. For example, Don Bosco and Leififi together while Avele and St Joseph another. The next year, we change it around, D.Bosco and Avele, St Joseph Leififi. What ever way you would like to do the mix, it's important to rotate every year. And while we do that, another emphasis should be the teaching of moral values, proper behaviour etc. in schools. We can continue in this style until we see the inter school rivalry demolished and our society's thinking towards competitions change for the good. This should be a model for all sports for the students in Samoa.
Disappointed Samoan!
written by USA, May 04, 2008
This is PATHETICALLY STUPID! I'm not talking about the government's position but the way these high schools are behaving. At the same time, I'm not one bit surprised! This has been an ongoing problem for our Samoan youth. Samoa is not the only place these out-of-control losers are doing this. Samoans in the US are also behaving the same - not just in high school but also in their local churches. It's no wonder foreigners think Samoans are primitive and uncivilized group of people. It makes a lot of sense. When you bring those Samoans here in the US they will continue to behave the same way. I'm starting to wonder if Samoans are genetically barbaric. It's no wonder our Samoans are undereducated, underrepresented, and illiterate. It'll take a lot more than the usual beating to change our ways... EDUCATION is the answer to curing this primitive behavior. But then, these same kids are doing the same thing in school. We have such a bad rap... grow up kids!
E ai e Don Bosco, Avele, Leififi ma St. Jo the vine moto a'e maluelue ai nifo o isi aoga i Samoa.

It is a stupid and unwise idea to cancel sport evens for all the schools because of the riot between these schools. Why punished the whole school system whey only four schools involved? Suspend these schools from participating in any sport events for two years or so. Also have the schools pay for the damage to business in town and monetary compensations for the victims. The schools involved should also given community service hours to clean the town area which they trashed. And it is a good idea to put these in school sports bylaws or even in the law to try and prevent these kind of acts from happenning. It will serve as a reminder to the rest of the schools in Samoa if they misbehave their fate is the same. Please reconsider the decision for the sake of our children's future in sports and their phyical heallth.
Stereotyping
written by Samoan, May 05, 2008
Dear USA; Who the heck are you to stereotype our people like that? How much sports do you watch? Even the so called professionals in the US push, shove and punch each other during their games. Soccer games in Europe, Centeral and South America often have major, major riots that spills into the streets, so stop cutting down on the youth of my country.
This is a worldwide problem because it comes with being competetiveness. I don't like fights and riots but I also understand that kids will be kids and these kind of things happen in sports.
My disappointment comes when you called a people undereducated, under-represented, illiterate and barbaric. When some kid open fires on a US campus, we don't say Americans are murderers, or when a College team wins the NCAA tournament and the kids riot and burn cars in the street we don't say the Americans are undereducated; when Bush drives the country into deep --- we don't say Americans are idiots. No, we don't say that because we, the rest of Samoa know better. We don't let the actions of a few smear the good name of others. For your information, we have a Samoan educators, business people and successful in other professions that are offended by your
Primitive Samoan
written by Let's Get Ready to Rumble!, May 05, 2008
Riots in High School sports is very common in the U.S.
I disagree with the author of Disappointed Samoan which portrays Samoans as uneducated and primitive.
People riot for many unknown reasons, and it is not uncommon for fans of the winning team to riot in the streets. I also disagree with the comments indicating that the Samoan (island-raised) youths have brought bad behaivors to the U.S.

Lets stick to the facts:
People riot all over the world whether it is sports related or not. When I was stationed in South Korea, the Koreans rioted for every possible cause known to man. Soccer fans in Europe riot when they win, and lose. Is education the answer to their rioting. Absolutely no.
So, lets not look down on our own people because of the poor choices of a few.

As an OU Alum, I attend the OU/Texas football game every year. Fans for both schools look forward to this rivalry game and every year over 100,000 plus fans simply get at each others throats. As you can see education does not change fan behavior. Even the most educated people will show their allegiance to their Alma Mater.

There goes the baby with the bathwater!

I'd go further to say that this reactionary resolution uses the same type of mentality displayed by teh hooligans in town. Its employing chemotherapy for a headache.
Ban them all
written by JM, May 06, 2008
It would seem fairer to ban only those schools who have been involved in this of hooliganism in the past and present (Avele, Don Bosco, SJC, Leififi, Wesley et al) but if we were to ban only them, it would make for a pretty mediocre rugby competition watching the ruthless Samoa College take on the mighty Robert Louis Stevenson. smilies/grin.gif

Conflicting Policies?
written by Martin, May 06, 2008
Man.. SPG marketing strategy.. Samoa to be the Sports Capital of the Pacific.. Therefore lets set up our complex and ask China to donate.. Ok.. NOw we have multi sport complex.. This brawl occured.. ok.. lets forget about our Sports Capital for the Pacific because SPG is history now.. and let the white elephants stands.. and lets just punish the all the school kids.. lets apply the action and reaction concept.. lets show who's boss to these kids.. lets do it.. and let everyone see our stand (as now we are not so popular with RHD).. ok ok.. wow.. lets just say.. forget about that ambition of a Sports Capital of the Pacific because right now.. The kids needs to be discplined..

Ok.. No interschool sports... means sports development is set back. .. as small competitions like these on a grand scale such as a national level, produce better sports people for Samoa raise local awareness.. anyways.. we can always import our sports players from New Zealand and other countries.. and just have the local ones play the audience role.. hehe..

IRONIC..

Thanks for the space.

Banning School Sports
written by Ben, May 11, 2008
Not a good idea. As expressed by some folks, punish only those responsible and the schools involved. Impose a monetary fine for the schools involved. i.e. schools to compensate the injured innocent(s), pay to rebuild damages to businesses and perform community services for 8 hrs/Sat. for 4 consecutive Saturdays. And if proven, the guilty student(s) should pay a monetary fine. Expelling or suspension will not do the student any educational justice because his/her education will be lost or limited. Too many school aged kids on the streets seller, fans, lavalavas etc................
