“We are almost there!” His Highness

The Head of State, His Highness Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi, is convinced that Samoa is on track to medal in possibly the next Olympic Games.
“We are almost there!” His Highness said yesterday in a meeting with the local media at the official residence at Vailele
“We are already within reach of a medal, we just have to hang in there and continue trying.”
Tupua and Masiofo Filifilia returned recently from an official visit to China as guests of honour during the Olympic Games of the Chinese Government.
His Highness was on hand to cheer boxer Farani Tavui in the boxing ring, and also paid him a special call when he was taken to hospital for medical attention after he was knocked out in the ring.
The official party also cheered for archer Muaausa Joseph Walter, as he made his first appearance in the world’s premiere sporting event.
The champion archer’s demonstrated skills impressed His Highness, and further reassured his personal beliefs about the potentials of Samoan athletes.
“Our athletes are very talented, Muaausa for example took up archery some 4 years ago, yet he competed very well against people who were involved as young as 5 years old.
“We now have the sporting facilities available, thanks to Government and the assistance from China, to develop this talent so we are capable of developing to the stand where we can win medals.
“I’m sure are athletes have the skills to not just win medals but gold medals in the future.”
Tupua paralleled the gold medal winning success of the Chinese fencing team to what Samoan athletes are capable of.
“Fencing is a traditional sport for the Europeans yet the Chinese were winning the gold medals.  If they can do that I don’t see why we can’t do that too.”
His Highness urged the sporting community in the country to persevere and not to give up.
His Highness plays tennis and is also an avid road walker.
